A 17-year-old adolescent jumped in pursuit of a man accused of snatching two bracelets from a woman in Brickell, managed to catch up with him, and helped to keep him detained until the police arrived, even after the suspect allegedly sprayed him with pepper spray.
The young man who intervened is 17 years old, while the suspect was identified by the Miami police as Yağız Doğan, 21, according to Telemundo 51.
The police report detailed that it all started around 6:00 PM when the woman was withdrawing money from an ATM on Brickell Avenue. Doğan allegedly approached her, complimented her bracelets, and asked if she wanted to sell them.
The woman took off the two pieces to show them to him, and once the young man had them in his hands, he ran away, according to that version.
The victim then started to shout "Thief!", and the teenager decided to chase after him.
The young man managed to catch and hold him until the officers arrived, although the accused allegedly used pepper spray against him during the struggle.
The police later found the two bracelets inside the accused's bag, according to the information released from the arrest report.
CBS News Miami reported the incident on Thursday near Southwest 14th Street, highlighting that the woman's screams also alerted neighbors and others who were nearby.
Xio Fermin told the television station that she was walking her dog when she heard a woman scream that she had been robbed.
A video recorded after the chase shows several people surrounding the accused while one citizen holds him down until the police arrive.
Fermin especially highlighted that the man who was holding the suspect did not give up even after being sprayed with pepper spray.
"It takes courage to chase after someone," said the witness, who asserted that the citizen stayed on top of the accused and did not let him escape.
The defendant is already facing another similar case
The arrest took another turn during the bail hearing. Judge Mindy Glazer noted that Doğan is already facing charges for a similar incident and agreed with the prosecution that he was allegedly targeting victims to carry out this type of robbery.
According to court records cited by CBS Miami, Doğan is also a suspect in a case that occurred in July, when he allegedly arranged through Facebook Marketplace to buy a diamond ring valued at $15,000 from a woman and then fled with the item.
The robbery this week would have been different. The police stated that there was no prior agreement: Doğan allegedly saw the woman, approached her, and offered to buy the two bracelets, valued at thousands of dollars.
According to police reports, he faced two counts of third-degree felony theft and one count of assault, with a total bail set at $6,000.
CBS Miami later reported that records showed Doğan had posted a bail of $1,100 and that, once released, he would be placed under house arrest and prohibited from approaching the victims in both cases.
The case adds to other high-value jewelry thefts recently recorded in Miami-Dade. In July, three young people were arrested in Doral for the attempted theft of a necklace valued at approximately $240,000.
There have also been situations where citizens intervene directly. In March, a man carrying a baby in his arms tackled an alleged thief who was fleeing in the Dolphin Mall after hearing the screams of a woman asking for help.
