At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, the informal currency market concludes its session this Sunday, August 9, 2026, with a mixed outlook: the US dollar remains unchanged, the euro loses ground for the second consecutive day, and the MLC continues its decline, although with low trading volume that necessitates caution in its valuation. You can check the complete evolution at .
The U.S. dollar closes the day at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP), exactly the same value it held yesterday and that it maintained seven days ago. The stability of the greenback is notable: in the past month, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 655 and a high of 675 pesos in the informal market, reflecting an unusual streak of containment. Compared to 30 days ago, when it was quoted at around 663 pesos, it has risen by 10 pesos; however, this comparison should be taken with caution, as it may partially reflect methodological adjustments of the index. It continues to dictate the pulse of the informal market in a context of structural foreign currency shortages.
The euro, on the other hand, drops three pesos compared to the previous day, closing at 778 Cuban pesos (CUP). According to data from the previous session, the European currency was at 781 pesos, and seven days ago it averaged 788 pesos, reflecting an accumulated decrease of 10 pesos over the week (-1.3%). In the last 30 days, the euro has reached a maximum of 790 and a minimum of 745 pesos in the informal market. Although it has gained 20.5 pesos compared to the 757 from a month ago on a monthly basis, the trend in recent days indicates a progressive cooling. It exceeds the dollar by 105 pesos, solidifying its dominant position in the parallel market.
The MLC closes at around 446 Cuban pesos (CUP), a value that should be considered indicative given the low trading volume recorded during this time frame. Compared to the previous session, when it was reported at 461 pesos, it shows a decline of 15 pesos (-3.3%). Over the last week, it has lost 33.5 pesos (-7%), and in the past 30 days, it has fluctuated between a maximum of 496 and a minimum of 425 pesos. With no physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 778 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 446 CUP (indicative value, few data points).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 621 CUP per dollar and 717 CUP per euro, remaining well below the values that govern daily practice in the informal currency market. The gap between the official and informal rates exceeds 50 pesos for the dollar and is around 61 pesos for the euro, highlighting the disconnect between the formal economy and the reality faced by Cubans.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the public. In the past month, the official dollar has risen from 592 to 621 CUP and the official euro from 677 to 717 CUP, but these gradual adjustments have not narrowed the gap with the parallel market.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly affects domestic prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. The decline of the euro and the drop in MLC in the last week do not necessarily relieve the pressure on households, as the dollar—the most sought-after currency—remains strong.
