A video that has been widely circulated on social media in recent hours shows a tense confrontation between the family members of patients and police officers at the Provincial Hospital of Ciego de Ávila, amidst the growing discontent regarding the precarious state of the healthcare system in Cuba.
Although the details that triggered the incident have not been disclosed, the images have generated numerous reactions.
The video shows five police officers in front of two women who are visibly agitated and shouting, while several people witness the scene.
"Instead of helping desperate people, this is what they do: repress individuals filled with despair and lacking everything. Where they should provide support, this is what they do," wrote the activist Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia on Facebook, one of the first to share the images, which garnered over 466,000 views.
The video was also shared by activist Armando Labrador from Cuba Primero, who pointed out that "when a person arrives desperate at a hospital, they need solutions, care, and answers, not repression."
The activist Irma Broek described the scene as follows: "What is happening at the Provincial Hospital of Ciego de Ávila is heartbreaking. Seeing desperate family members lacking basic medical supplies, begging for care for their sick, is already a daily torture."
The incident occurs amid the worst documented health crisis in Cuba in decades. In April, it was reported that 461 out of 651 medications from the national essential medicines list were either completely unavailable or in low supply, over 70% of the total.
By July, the situation had worsened: the Cuban pharmaceutical industry could not guarantee nearly 300 of the 395 medications promised to the national health system.
This shortage is compounded by surgical waiting lists that exceed 96,000 patients, an infant mortality rate of 9.3 per every thousand live births, and a decrease in childhood cancer survival from 85% to 65%, attributed to a lack of essential medications.

There were also criticisms regarding the apparent passivity of some individuals who witnessed the incident.
"The worst part is seeing so many people watching and doing nothing," expressed a commentator, while another stated, "It's time to say enough is enough, because today it's her, and tomorrow it could be any of us."
However, there is no consensus regarding what happened or the actions of the agents.
Several users emphasized the need to understand the full context before assigning responsibilities.
"What happened? In the end, they mention the arrest, but no one provides the context. If you're going to share information, share it fully," one of them questioned.
Another insisted, "First, we need to understand what happened before giving opinions. We shouldn't speak for the sake of speaking without knowing the reasons."
Some opinions also defended the need to maintain order and respect healthcare personnel.
“I am not in favor of the communist system, but one thing has nothing to do with the other. Those people were creating a disturbance, and the police are doing their job,” stated a user.
Another pointed out that "there are good doctors and they need to be respected because their work requires concentration. Respect in order to be respected."
