David Bisbal experienced moments of distress in Bogotá when the 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook Colombia on Monday.
The artist from Almería was in his accommodation when the ground began to shake violently. Without letting go of his phone, he recorded the swaying of the lamps from his room while the city's seismic alarm sounded in the background, sharing the footage on his Instagram stories.
"A terremoto, I hope nothing happens, my God… Please, please, little virgin. Okay, okay, we're good. Come on, calm down, come on, stop," he is heard saying with a shaky voice.
The earthquake, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, in the Chocó department, was recorded at 7:34 AM local time and was felt strongly in Bogotá and in numerous cities in western Colombia, as well as in Ecuador and Panama.
Once the tremor stopped, the singer went down to the street as a precaution against the possibility of aftershocks. Shortly after, he reassured his followers: "In the end, everything is fine. I came down in case there was an aftershock, and they told me everything is okay now."
The artist traveled to Colombia accompanied by his family and had previously explored Bogotá, visiting places like the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. After confirming that everyone was safe, Bisbal shifted his focus to those who did suffer the consequences of the disaster.
"You have already seen the magnitude of this natural disaster that has been very severe in Cali and other provinces in the interior of Colombia. From here, I want to send a greeting and a big kiss to the affected people. We are all with our hearts in our throats," he wrote on his social media.
The singer also shared the emergency contact numbers for Colombia so that his followers could reach out to the authorities if they needed assistance, and he mentioned that he would stay attentive to initiatives aimed at helping those affected.
Bisbal was not the only artist to react publicly. Shakira, Maluma, J Balvin, and other artists shared messages of solidarity with the Colombians affected by the earthquake.
The Barranquilla singer wrote: "Dear Colombia, my heart is with everyone who felt this earthquake today and with the families who are going through moments of distress. In times like these, we Colombians know how to come together and support one another. All my strength and love for my land."
