The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel has once again pointed to Fidel Castro as a reference for interpreting the current problems of the world and stated that many of the issues raised by the late Cuban dictator decades ago remain unresolved.
«Fidel Lives! Those who doubt it should look at today's world through his legacy,» Díaz-Canel wrote this Thursday on his X account, coinciding with the centenary of Castro's birth, who was born on August 13, 1926.
The leader specifically mentioned the speeches delivered by Castro at the United Nations (UN) in 1960 and 1979, his participation in the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and the nearly 500 "Reflections" he published during his last years.
"Everything he denounced at the UN in 1960 and 1979, what he alerted about in Rio in 1992, and what he wrote in nearly 500 Reflections continue to be unresolved issues," stated Díaz-Canel.
In a second message on X, he insisted on presenting the policies promoted by Castro as examples for the present, as if "continuity" were enough to solve the current problems of Cuba and the rest of the world.
"Everything he built with internationalism and solidarity remains proof that with will and cooperation, a better world is possible. Let's make it happen now," he stated.
The statements come amid the extensive official campaign organized for Castro's centenary.
The government officially designated 2026 as the "Year of the Centennial of Chief Commander Fidel Castro Ruz", after Díaz-Canel presented the proposal to the National Assembly in December 2025.
The exaltation of the former leader's figure has been constant throughout the year. At the beginning of August, the Communist Party of Cuba stated that "Fidel is eternal", a claim that generated numerous critical and sarcastic responses from Cubans who contrasted this proclaimed "eternity" with blackouts, shortages, and the economic decline of the island.
The campaign has reached even spaces somewhat unrelated to politics. In Holguín, for example, authorities and official organizations included 100 piñatas in the activities for the centenary, presenting them as a tribute also directed at children and young people.
Another episode showed to what extent the exaltation of Castro has reached: a regime supporter reproduced on a fingernail the military insignia of "Commander in Chief" that Fidel Castro wore and presented the manicure as a way to honor him for his 100 years.
The deployment is part of a broader program announced since 2025, with actions designed to extend to "all areas of life in the country" and promote Castro's ideas and thinking.
In 2026, the cult has reached schools, universities, workplaces, sports activities, cultural events, and community spaces.
