A woman lost her life this Friday on Bonampak Avenue in Cancún, Quintana Roo, after being struck by a white Honda truck that was speeding.
Local media unofficially reported that the driver would be a Cuban doctor, though no authority has officially confirmed either his nationality or his profession.
The accident was recorded by urban surveillance cameras of the state.
The account Quintana Roo Urbano en X shared the images with the text: “This is how a Cuban doctor killed a female doctor this afternoon on Bonampak Avenue.”
For its part, El Momento QRoo specified that "preliminarily, it has been reported that it would involve a doctor from the Mexican Institute of Social Security," and clarified that the information "should be confirmed or dismissed by the authorities as part of the investigations."
How did the accident happen?
According to reports from local media, the driver of the Honda was traveling north to south on Bonampak when, near Chinchorro street, they lost control of the vehicle.
The truck mounted the central median and knocked down a streetlight pole.
Then, overturned and without stopping, it continued its path for more than 50 meters until it collided with the rear of a white Kia truck, apparently a vehicle from a digital platform, in the vicinity of Plaza Península.
At that moment, a woman who was getting out of the Kia was struck by the impact. She died at the scene despite the paramedics' efforts. Her body was taken to the Semefo for autopsy and identification.
The driver of the Honda was injured and was taken to an IMSS clinic for medical attention. At least two other people were also injured.
"This was not an accident."
The medium Esto Es Quintana Roo Mx described the scene harshly: "It wasn't her time. A woman died today without reason or fear on a busy avenue in Cancun. She wasn't driving, she wasn't running. She was in the parking lot of Plaza Península when tragedy struck her."
The same outlet reported that, according to witnesses, the driver "was speeding" and concluded: "This was not an accident. It was recklessness that took the life of a woman who went out today to work, shop, and live."
Regarding the possible state of the driver, unofficial reports suggest that he may have been driving under the influence of alcohol, but this version has not been verified by the authorities either.
A Cuban threatens reporters at the scene
Aside from the accident itself, a video captured by Heraldo Viral recorded an additional incident during the news coverage of the disaster.
A man of Cuban origin, present in the area but with no apparent connection to the Honda driver, began acting aggressively and threateningly towards the reporters covering the incident.
The communicator who recorded the scene described the situation on camera: "This man of Cuban descent is being arrogant with the other people, the other colleagues... he is acting haughty, as always, and he is not even in his own country."
No connection has been established between this individual and the driver of the van; it would appear to be a different person who was present at the scene.
Context: Cuban doctors in Quintana Roo
The accident occurs at a time of high presence of Cuban doctors in the state. In February 2026, the IMSS-Bienestar program reported 173 Cuban doctors operating in rural areas of Quintana Roo, with 30 more on the way.
Nationally, the government of Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed its commitment to the agreement on Cuban medical brigades, with around 3,650 doctors distributed across 23 states.
This is not the first incident involving Cuban citizens in Cancun that has attracted media coverage. In recent months, a Cuban was arrested after hitting a person in Mexico City, and other cases of violence in the tourist area of the Mexican Caribbean have also caught the attention of social media.
