A cyclist was severely injured this Sunday after colliding with a car on the road connecting Varadero with Cárdenas, in the province of Matanzas. The accident was reported by independent communicator Christian Arbolaez through the Facebook group "Cardenenses en Facebook", a community platform that he manages and which regularly documents local incidents in that municipality.
So far, official sources have not confirmed the name of the victim, the exact time of the incident, nor the current condition of the injured person.
The Varadero-Cárdenas highway has a concerning history of serious accidents. In July 2025, a fatal crash at the Varadero toll booth resulted in two fatalities when a car lost control and collided with the divider wall. In November of that same year, an accident in Cárdenas left six injured, one of whom was serious, at an intersection with poor signage connected to the Vía Blanca leading to Varadero.
In June 2026, a resident of Varadero died in a motorcycle accident on the Vía Rápida in Matanzas, near Guásima. And in August 2025, a cyclist was killed after being hit on the Autopista Nacional in Matanzas.
The area faces structural issues regarding road safety: inadequate signage, poor pavement condition, and high speeds of motor vehicles, factors that place cyclists in a particularly risky situation on interurban roads.
The use of bicycles as a daily means of transportation has surged in Cuba due to the fuel crisis and the collapse of public transport, increasing the exposure of these vulnerable users to accidents on high-traffic roads.
The national road safety situation is equally alarming. In 2025, there were 7,538 traffic accidents recorded throughout the country, resulting in 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries. Motorcycles and mopeds were involved in 63% of the incidents, with the main identified causes being lack of attention while driving, failure to yield the right of way, and speeding.
Arbolaez, whose posts in the group "Cardenenses en Facebook" have served as a primary source for multiple news articles about Cárdenas, also reported this month on the theft of solar panels at the Maternal Home in Cárdenas and, in June, the death of a 17-year-old after a brawl in the municipality.
The condition of the cyclist injured this Sunday remains unconfirmed, and Cuban authorities have not issued any statement regarding the accident.
