The violent death of young Gabriel A. Méndez Quesada has caused shock in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba, where dozens of family members, friends, and acquaintances have turned to social media to bid him farewell and demand justice in response to yet another incident that once again highlights the issue of violence in the municipality.
Gabriel, known among his friends as "Macoto" or "Maco," died after a violent incident, the exact circumstances of which have not yet been officially clarified. Posts shared in Facebook groups from Palma Soriano indicate that the young man may have lost his life during a confrontation.
The versions shared on social media attribute the death to an altercation that occurred during a fight. However, up to this point, no official account has been released that accurately reconstructs what happened or confirms the individual responsibilities pointed out by internet users.

A post in the group Revolico Palma Soriano (Official) claims that a security guard was allegedly assaulted first. According to this account, both had argued outside the establishment, and Gabriel supposedly struck the worker with a stone after he returned accompanied by others. The version states that a struggle ensued, during which the security worker drew a knife.
So far, these are testimonies shared on social media that have not been independently verified, making it impossible to establish the sequence of events with certainty or assign criminal responsibilities.
The news sparked an immediate wave of messages of grief among those who knew Gabriel. Beyond the condolences, the testimonies help to create a picture of a young man well-known in his community, and whose death took many by surprise.
One of the most personal messages was posted by Manuel Alberto Aportela Beyra, who shared several photographs of the young man and expressed his disbelief at the news.
"Coño Maco," he began his farewell. "I still can't believe this," wrote Aportela, who acknowledged that his friend "had thousands of flaws," but assured that "you were never a bad person, and I, along with everyone else, knows that."
Other messages reveal the close connections he had with friends and neighbors. Yuriel Pérez stated that he will always cherish in his memory "the good times we had in the neighborhood," while a close acquaintance confessed that just a few days prior, she had spoken with him and could not believe the news of his death.
"A few days ago we talked, and today I open Facebook and the first thing I see is this. I really can't believe it," expressed L'Tal Liliana.
Another resident recalled that just the day before, Gabriel had been sharing coffee with close friends, a mundane scene that contrasted painfully with the news of his death just hours later.
One of the most heartbreaking messages was posted by Madelaisi Quesada, who expressed the deep pain caused by the loss and lamented the way in which life was taken away.
"They finished us off, you broke my heart, my child. [...] You didn't deserve to be killed like that," she wrote.
The impact of what occurred was also reflected in the comment from Yuleidis Martínez, who explained that she hadn't seen Gabriel in a while because he was away from Palma Soriano.
"I haven't seen you in a long time because I'm not in Palma, and now I see you in a post that you've left this world," he lamented, before describing him as a "good and healthy" person.
Some comments went further, highlighting a sense of insecurity during the nights. Janet Tormos stated that the situation is not limited to that municipality and expressed concern over issues related to violence, thefts, and bladed weapons in Cuba. These are testimonies and citizen perceptions circulated on social media, not official data on crime.
The images later shared by crime reporter Niover Licea on his Nio reporting a crime page showed a crowd attending Gabriel's funeral in Palma Soriano. Family, friends, and neighbors gathered to bid their final farewell amidst scenes of deep sorrow.
"Amid tears and sorrow, his loved ones bid him a final farewell," the platform noted.
