At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, closes for this Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with a relatively calm outlook for the dollar and a slight dip for the euro. The Cuban peso remains stable against the U.S. dollar, while the European currency has incurred losses for the second consecutive day. The MLC, for its part, records an indicative value of 461 pesos, with a low volume of transactions supporting that figure.
The U.S. dollar closes at 663 Cuban pesos (CUP), exactly the same level as the previous day. It remains unchanged compared to yesterday, consolidating its position as a stable reference in the informal market as the day comes to a close. Over the past week, the greenback has dropped only 2.5 pesos — a decline of 0.4% — and the comparison over 30 days shows the same variation, although it is important to consider that this data may reflect methodological adjustments in the index as well as the actual market movement. In the last month, the dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 663 and a maximum of 675 pesos in the informal market. The demand for dollars remains high among those looking to protect their savings against the depreciation of the peso.
The euro has dropped to 757 Cuban pesos at the close of this session, compared to the 760 CUP recorded yesterday. This represents a decrease of 3 pesos compared to the previous session, equivalent to a decline of 0.4%. The trend for the week is more pronounced: seven days ago, the euro averaged 768 pesos, indicating an accumulated loss of 10.5 pesos during that period, a 1.4% decrease. In the last 30 days, the European currency has reached a high of 790 and a low of 755 pesos in the informal market. It surpasses the dollar by 94 pesos, consolidating its dominant position as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market.
The MLC is around 461 Cuban pesos at the close, one peso below the 462 recorded in the previous session. However, this figure should be taken as a guideline, given the low trading volume that supports it during this time frame. In the past week, the MLC has risen 18.5 pesos from the 443 of seven days ago, an increase of 4.2%. Without physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run shops that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
Exchange Rate Evolution
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 663 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 757 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 461 CUP (indicative value, limited data).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), set today at 631 CUP per dollar and 731 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market. The gap between the official dollar rate and the informal rate exceeds 32 pesos; in the case of the euro, the difference reaches 26 pesos.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population. In the past month, the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 592 to 631 CUP, and that of the euro from 676 to 731 CUP, reflecting a sustained depreciation of the peso also in the official channel.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the informal Cuban market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency buy-and-sell postings in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation excludes atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
