is showing a mixed opening this Thursday, August 20: two currencies have dropped while another remains unchanged.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar remains unchanged compared to the previous day, the euro has slightly weakened, and the MLC has experienced a more pronounced drop, although its valuation should be taken with caution due to the low volume of transactions supporting it.

Summary of exchange rates for the day

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 663 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 750 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 471 CUP (indicative value, few data).

Dollar (USD): stability at 663 pesos

The US dollar is trading this Thursday morning at 663 CUP in the informal market, with a buying price of 660 CUP and a selling price of 665 CUP. It remains unchanged compared to the previous day.

In a weekly perspective, the greenback has decreased by just two pesos compared to the 665 CUP from seven days ago.

Exchange Rate Evolution

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 667 CUP, the difference is a decrease of four pesos, although this comparison may partially reflect methodological adjustments of the index.

In the last month, the dollar has fluctuated between a high of 675 CUP and the current low of 663 CUP.

Euro (EUR): slight setback to 750 pesos

The euro is trading this Thursday at 750 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying price of 740 CUP and a selling price of 760 CUP.

This represents a drop of one peso compared to the 751 CUP recorded in the previous session, a decline of 0.1%.

The downward trend is becoming more evident on the weekly horizon: seven days ago, the euro was at 760 CUP, which implies a loss of 10 pesos in a week (1.3%).

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 771 CUP, the accumulated drop is 21 pesos, although this figure may include methodological adjustments to the index.

The maximum in the last 30 days was 790 CUP, and the minimum corresponds with the current rate of 750 CUP.

It is claimed to be the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, exceeding the dollar by 87 pesos.

MLC: notable decline, indicative data

The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) is currently around 471 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase price of 441 CUP and a selling price of 501 CUP.

This value should be taken as a guideline, as the low volume of transactions recorded during this time frame limits the representativeness of the data.

Regarding the previous day, when it was reported at 488 CUP, the MLC shows a decrease of 17 pesos.

In contrast, a week ago it was priced at 450 CUP, which represents a weekly gain of 21 pesos (4.7%).

In the last month, it has fluctuated widely, reaching a maximum of 529 CUP and a minimum of 413 CUP.

Without a physical existence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Official rate against the informal market

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 631 CUP per dollar and 731 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that apply in everyday transactions in the informal currency market.

Although Segment III was presented as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the actual demand for foreign currency among the population.

The gap between the two markets today amounts to 32 pesos in the case of the dollar and 19 pesos for the euro.
