At 8:00 PM, Cuban local time, closes the day on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with a dollar that remains steady and a euro that is losing ground. The greenback ends the day at 663 Cuban pesos, unchanged from the previous session, while the European currency retreats to 750 pesos, down from 757 the day before. The MLC, for its part, hovers around 471 pesos, although this figure should be taken as indicative given the low trading volume backing it.

The U.S. dollar is quoted at 663 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this trading day. It remains unchanged compared to the previous day, solidifying notable stability in recent days. Over the past week, the dollar has only lost 2.5 pesos, which amounts to a decline of 0.4% from the 665 CUP of seven days ago. The comparison over 30 days, which should be taken with caution as it may reflect methodological adjustments of the index, places the previous quotation at 666 pesos, a minimal difference of 3.5 pesos. In the last month, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 and a high of 675 pesos in the informal market. It continues to dictate the rhythm of the informal market amid a context of structural currency shortages.

The euro closes the day at 750 Cuban pesos (CUP), which represents a decrease of 7 pesos compared to the previous day when it was reported at 757 CUP. The downward trend is also evident in the weekly outlook: seven days ago, the European currency was trading at 760 pesos, 10 pesos above the current level. For the monthly total, the decrease amounts to 17.5 pesos compared to the 768 CUP of 30 days ago, although this comparison may be influenced by methodological adjustments to the index. The euro has reached a high of 790 pesos and a low of 750 in the last month, with this closing representing its lowest value of the period. It exceeds the dollar by 87 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC closes at around 471 Cuban pesos (CUP), a value that should be considered indicative given the low volume of operations registered during this time frame. This represents an increase of 9.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when it was reported at 461 CUP. In a weekly perspective, the MLC has accumulated a rise of 17.5 pesos from the 453 CUP recorded seven days ago. Over the past month, it has fluctuated between a minimum of 413 and a maximum of 529 pesos. Without physical existence, its use is limited to the state-owned shops that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Exchange Rate Evolution

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 663 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 750 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 471 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 631 CUP per dollar and 731 CUP per euro, remains significantly below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the real demand for foreign currency from the population. The gap between the official and informal rates is, as of this Wednesday, 32 pesos in the case of the dollar and 19 pesos in the case of the euro.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every variation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. The decline of the euro and the stability of the dollar at current levels reflect the permanent tension between the limited supply of foreign currency and a demand that does not relent.

The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency trading posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation disregards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
