The weather station at Jucarito, in the municipality of Río Cauto, Granma, recorded a maximum temperature of 39.0 °C this Thursday, setting a new record for the month of August at that observation point.
CMKX Radio Bayamo reported that the measurement was taken in the afternoon and quoted Master of Science in Meteorology Edgar Quintana Valdés.
"Today, August 20, 2026, a maximum temperature of 39.0 °C was recorded at the Jucarito weather station (78361)," noted Quintana.
The previous record for August at that station was 38.8 °C, and it had been in effect since August 7, 2023. The new measurement surpassed it by two-tenths.
Jucarito has already secured a prominent place in the records of extreme heat in Cuba. In April 2024, that same locality reached 40.1 °C, thereby setting the absolute maximum temperature record for the country.
The new record adds to other milestones set during this summer. At the end of July, two weather stations in Camagüey established new highs: the station at Ignacio Agramonte International Airport reached 38.1 °C, while the station in the municipality of Camagüey recorded 37.2 °C.
A month earlier, the La Palma station in Pinar del Río, reached 37.6 °C and broke three temperature records, including the highest provincial record for the month of June, which had stood for 68 years.
High temperatures become particularly difficult to endure amid prolonged blackouts.
In Havana, for example, the Cubans have turned to rooftops, parks, and the Malecón to try to sleep and escape the heat during nights without electricity.
The combination of high temperatures and power outages leaves many families without fans or air conditioning during some of the hottest hours of summer.
