The Cuban right-handed pitcher Brander Guevara, 23 years old, severed his ties with the Cuban Baseball Federation and decided not to return to the island following his season with the Conspiradores de Querétaro in the Mexican League, as reported by specialized journalist Francys Romero.
Guevara will be represented by the veteran agent Joe Cubas and his agency J. Cubas Caribbean Baseball Holdings, one of the most influential in the market for Latin American baseball players aspiring to Major League Baseball.
Romero, who is closely following the case of the prospect, noted that "several scouts believe he has significant signing potential" and mentioned that there will soon be updates regarding the next steps for the pitcher and his agency.
Originally from Artemisa, Guevara was activated by the Conspirators of Querétaro on June 1, 2026, after resolving his immigration status in Mexico.
In at least six starts with the Querétaro team, he recorded a record of 1-1 and an earned run average of 7.41, although his best outing presented a more promising image: on July 11, he pitched five innings, allowing one run and striking out nine batters against the Olmecas de Tabasco.
Before leaving Cuba, the young pitcher had accumulated 100 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.07 in 79.2 innings with the Cazadores de Artemisa in the 64th National Series, in addition to shining in May 2026 with six scoreless innings and seven strikeouts in a 14-0 victory over Industriales in the IV Elite League.
The profile of Guevara is well-known among Major League Baseball scouts. MLB Pipeline had highlighted him as a prospect with good mechanics, solid arm action, and durability, with a fastball reported between 90 and 91 mph and the potential to reach 93-94 mph. He also participated in the 2018 U-18 World Cup with the Cuban national team.
Joe Cubas, his new representative, is a historic figure in placing Cuban baseball players in MLB since the 1990s, when he managed the careers of stars like Liván Hernández and Orlando "El Duque" Hernández. In July 2025, he relaunched his activities with J. Cubas Caribbean Baseball Holdings/Academy, with facilities in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and more than 20 prospects in his program.
The case of Guevara reflects a trend that shows no signs of stopping. Cuba now has 29 active players in the Major League Baseball system so far in 2026, and during the international cycle 2024-2025 almost 40 Cuban prospects signed with MLB organizations.
The Mexican Baseball League has served as a regular springboard for these players: the most recent case before Guevara was that of pitcher Julio Robaina, who excelled in the LMB with a 1.47 ERA and was re-signed by the Atlanta Braves in May 2026.
Romero promised new updates on Guevara's next steps "very soon," suggesting that the accreditation process with MLB to access the international market may already be underway.
