The Southern Command of the United States eliminated four drug traffickers this Tuesday after carrying out a lethal kinetic attack against a narco-boat navigating established drug trafficking routes in the Caribbean, as confirmed by the military institution in an official statement.
The operation was led by General Francis L. Donovan, commander of SOUTHCOM, and was carried out by the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM). According to the official report, verified intelligence confirmed the vessel's active involvement in drug trafficking prior to executing the strike.
Southern Command accompanied the announcement with declassified aerial surveillance images—captured from a drone or reconnaissance aircraft—that show the boat with overlay tracking grids, a common practice of the institution to publicly document these operations.
"The Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere continues to carry out precise and lethal operations against the cartels. We will hunt them down, dismantle them, and defeat them. SOUTHCOM is committed to neutralizing the terror and violence of the cartels throughout the region and within U.S. territory," stated General Donovan.
What makes this operation particularly significant is that it marks the second lethal attack by JTF-WHEM in just three days. The first strike of the new force occurred on Monday when the same unit destroyed a low-profile vessel in the Eastern Pacific and killed two drug traffickers, thereby showcasing its operational capability.
The JTF-WHEM was formally activated on August 4 under the command of Major General of the Marine Corps Kevin Jarrard. The new structure replaced the previous Joint Task Force Southern Spear (Lanza del Sur, in Spanish) as the operational headquarters of SOUTHCOM for the Western Hemisphere and works in coordination with the Coalition Americas Against the Cartels, which includes 18 partner nations.
Both attacks this week break an operational pause of more than two months: the last strike by the predecessor force took place on June 21, when it destroyed a drug smuggling boat in the Caribbean resulting in two deaths and six survivors.
These operations fall under the "Southern Spear Operation," an anti-narcotics campaign publicly launched in November 2025 by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, although the first lethal attacks began on September 2 of that year.
Since then and until mid-2026, SOUTHCOM reported at least 21 kinetic attacks with 82 drug traffickers killed in its area of operations.
With the six fatalities resulting from the two attacks this week, the JTF-WHEM has demonstrated in its operational debut the capacity for rapid and sustained action that justified its establishment as a permanent command structure for the hemisphere.
