The Joint Task Force of the U.S. Southern Command in the Western Hemisphere carried out a lethal kinetic strike on Sunday against a low-profile vessel operating on drug trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific, resulting in the death of two individuals identified by the military command as narcoterrorists.
The operation was led by General Francis L. Donovan, commander of Southern Command, and was supported by confirmed intelligence that validated the vessel's active involvement in drug trafficking before ordering the attack.
This action is the first carried out under the name and structure of the new Joint Task Force of the Western Hemisphere, just 19 days after its formal activation on August 4, 2026.
General Donovan explained the purpose of the new structure in the official statement: "When I ordered the establishment of the Western Hemisphere Joint Task Force, it was precisely for this: to accelerate, synchronize, and execute lethal actions against these destabilizing narco-terrorist networks."
"We are committed to imposing systemic friction on narcoterrorists: disrupting their operations, dismantling their leadership, and eliminating cartel terror throughout the region," he added.
The new task force replaced the previous structure of the Southern Lance Operation and integrates naval, air, land, intelligence, and special operations capabilities, coordinated with the Coalition of the Americas Against the Cartels, which consists of 18 partner nations.
Southern Command also released unclassified thermal video footage of the attack, labeled as "unclassified," which shows the impact trail on the targeted vessel.
The South Command's anti-narcotics campaign began in late summer 2025 with a naval deployment in the Caribbean, and its first recorded attack occurred on September 2 of that year, before Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth formally announced it in November 2025 as Operation Southern Lance.
Since then, the campaign has spread from the Caribbean to the Eastern Pacific and has reportedly accumulated over 60 attacks and more than 200 deaths by mid-2026, although the figures vary by source.
Among the groups designated as primary targets are the Tren de Aragua and the ELN, classified by Washington as terrorist organizations.
The regional context in which this attack occurs includes direct warnings from Hegseth to the Cuban regime from Panama, where the Secretary of Defense stated that "all options" are on the table regarding Havana, which reflects an increasingly aggressive stance from Washington throughout the region.
General Donovan was clear in evaluating Sunday's operation: "Let me be clear: we will not allow narco-terrorists to operate with impunity in the Western Hemisphere, nor will we allow their deadly poison to reach American communities."
"This operation is a powerful demonstration of our lethal precision, overwhelming capability, and unwavering determination to protect the American homeland," he concluded.
