Verónica Lynn, one of the longest-serving and beloved actresses in Cuba, shared in an extensive interview her formula for maintaining vitality, clarity, and a desire to work at 95 years old: to hold no grudges and to do everything with joy.
The legend of Cuban television and theater discussed for over an hour with Tahimí Alvariño on the show "Esta es mi gente" of the Cubamás TV channel, published on Wednesday on YouTube.
In the interview, where she addressed many topics, the actress revealed the philosophy that sustains her energy and mental clarity after more than seven decades of uninterrupted career.
"I never hold a grudge, no matter what has been done to me; over time, I forget, because that brings wrinkles to the soul, and one's soul should never be wrinkled. The soul always needs to remain fresh," the actress stated with the ease of someone who has turned this principle into a way of life.
The other pillar of her recipe is joy. Tahimí Alvariño herself recalled that Lynn whispered this advice to her during a gathering of friends: "Never lose joy. Do everything with joy. Whatever you do, do it with joy."
The host described the actress as someone who cannot stop: if she does, "that's where everything ends." The facts support this statement: at 93 years old, she starred in the play "Frijoles Colorados" alongside actor Del Cabo, kneeling, standing up, and moving on stage for over an hour without interruption.
Lynn also attributes part of her sharpness to her role as an actress: "I am a very observant person, you see, because I am an actress, and actors are observers." That ability to view the world with attention, she says, keeps her connected to the creative process.
Born on May 7, 1931, in San Diego de los Baños, Pinar del Río, Lynn arrived in Havana when she was just five years old and before stepping onto a stage, she worked as a manicurist, hairdresser, and beauty products salesperson.
His television debut came on Gaspar Pumarejo's Channel 4, in the segment "Looking for New Voices," when he was around twenty years old.
The general public knew her as Doña Teresa in the telenovela "Sol de Batey", a production from 1985 that is considered one of the most popular in Cuban television history. That character, as she herself acknowledged, was what brought her widespread fame.
In the interview, she also spoke about the book "Verónica Lynn, a Life in Art," written by theater expert Yana Elsa Brugal and published in 2024, which explains her acting technique based on the Stanislavski method. "The book is not biographical; rather, it’s... it’s all about technique, theatrical technique; it’s all about acting," she explained. The volume sold out on the same day it was presented at the Book Fair.
In May, Lynn made a reappearance on Cuban television to celebrate her 95th birthday, and she continues to be active on the stages of Havana. Her closing message in the interview was as simple as the secret she keeps: "The soul must always remain fresh."
