NASA launches the new Roman space telescope: "It will revolutionize the way we observe the cosmos."

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from NASA launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida this Sunday at 7:26 AM Eastern Time aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, thus commencing a three-month journey to its final orbit, one million miles from Earth.

“At 7:26 a.m. ET (1126 UTC) on August 30, NASARoman took off into the skies en route to its new home 1 million miles from Earth. It is expected to reach its final destination in a month,” confirmed NASA on its X account.

The observatory is headed to the Lagrange point Sun-Earth L2, the same location where the James Webb telescope has been operating since 2022, situated about 1.6 million kilometers from our planet.

The Roman is designed as the next major observatory of the American space agency, with the central mission of unraveling the mysteries of the dark universe: dark energy, dark matter, and the large-scale structure of the cosmos.

The NASA administrator, Jared Isaacman, described the telescope as an instrument that will provide humanity with "a new atlas of the universe," capable of shedding light on "dark matter, dark energy, and the very structure of the universe."

"Roman is on its way. Years of hard work, extraordinary engineering, and an incredible launch. Congratulations to the entire NASA team and our partners who made this mission possible. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is about to open a completely new window to our universe," he expressed on X.

For her part, the associate director of the Scientific Missions Directorate, Nicky Fox, noted that Roman was specifically designed to answer why the expansion of the universe is accelerating, one of the deepest questions in contemporary astrophysics.

"It is going to revolutionize the way we observe the cosmos," he emphasized.

The main instrument of the telescope, the Wide Field Instrument, is a 300-megapixel infrared camera with a visual field about 100 times larger than that of Hubble, although with comparable sharpness. Its primary mirror measures 2.4 meters in diameter, similar to that of the legendary orbital observatory.

Among its scientific objectives, the detection of exoplanets stands out: Roman is expected to identify more than 100,000 new worlds, including over 1,000 using the technique of gravitational microlensing in the galactic bulge.

The telescope also carries a coronagraph on board, capable of suppressing starlight by up to a billion times to study planets directly.

The total life cycle cost of the mission amounts to approximately 4.3 billion dollars, while the launch contract with SpaceX was around 255 million. The mission was completed eight months ahead of schedule, moving up its original launch date set for 2027.

Once it has been installed in its final orbit, the Roman will have a nominal lifespan of five years, with an extended goal of a decade, during which it will map the universe with unprecedented breadth and speed in the history of space astronomy.

The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman (1925-2018), the first head of astronomy at NASA and the first woman to hold an executive position within the agency. Roman joined NASA in 1959, just six months after its establishment, and was instrumental in the planning of the Hubble telescope, which is why her colleagues referred to her as "the mother of Hubble."

The launch of the Roman comes months after another historic milestone for NASA: the Artemis II mission, completed in April 2026, which took four astronauts around the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.
