Marieta Pérez Alfaro, mother of Cuban comedian Eddy Ceballos, shared photos from the time her son performed as a professional clown this Monday, accompanied by an emotional message after more than 90 days of his incarceration in Cuba.
" My son no longer laughs, no longer sings, no longer...," lamented Marieta in her post on Facebook, where she reported that Ceballos is "absurdly charged with a crime he did not commit."
The photographs showcase a period in Eddy's artistic journey prior to Despingovery Channel, the satirical project that later made him viral on social media: he appears in clown attire, with a red nose and a white helmet, performing acrobatics and acts on stage.
"I feel sorrow, but not shame, rather pride for the man he has become," his mother expressed.
Marieta also wanted to highlight her son's extensive artistic career, which began long before his popular videos about Cuban reality.
"There is his work, which did not begin with Despingovery Channel, but much earlier; it traveled the world and left a mark on everyone who saw it and laughed with him," he wrote.
Ceballos, 38 years old, dedicated more than half of his life to the National Circus of Cuba and performed as a professional clown in over 13 countries. He was also a member of the comedy group Pagola la Paga and was associated with the Humor Promotion Center.
With Despingovery Channel, he gained new popularity starting in 2025 thanks to his parodies of nature documentaries, in which he used pseudoscientific narration to humorously highlight the deterioration of streets, buildings, and other infrastructure in Cuba.
Ceballos was arrested on June 1, after posting a video filmed at an abandoned military facility. He is accused of "revealing secrets concerning State Security," an offense outlined in Article 116 of the Cuban Penal Code.
His cameraman, Christian Rodríguez Riverón, also remains detained and faces charges related to the case.
From prison, the comedian sent a letter in early August in which he denied the accusations against him.
"I am an artist, not a spy; a comedian who reveals the reality that is visible to everyone, not a criminal," he stated.
The Prosecutor's Office rejected on August 19 a request to modify his precautionary measure, which means Ceballos remains in provisional detention at Combinado del Este, with no known trial date.
Her mother ended her message holding onto the hope that Eddy would again turn pain into humor.
"May the pain you are experiencing today be the fertilizer for your future work, may your tears transform into the laughter you know how to share with everyone, and may love and wisdom stay with you," he expressed.
