Marieta Pérez Alfaro, mother of the Cuban comedian Eddy Ceballos, shared photographs this Monday from the time when her son performed on stage as a professional clown, accompanied by an emotional message after more than 90 days of his imprisonment in Cuba.
"My son no longer laughs, no longer sings, no longer...", lamented Marieta in her post on Facebook, where she denounced that Ceballos is "absurdly prosecuted for a crime he did not commit".
The photographs showcase a stage in Eddy's artistic journey prior to Despingovery Channel, the satirical project that later made him go viral on social media: he appears in clown attire, with a red nose and a white helmet, as he performs acrobatics and acts on stage.
"I feel sadness, but not shame, rather pride for the man he has become," expressed his mother.
Marieta also wanted to highlight her son's extensive artistic career, which began long before his popular videos about Cuban reality.
"There is his work, which did not begin with Despingovery Channel, but long before that; he traveled the world and left a mark on everyone who saw him and laughed with him," he wrote.
Ceballos, 38 years old, dedicated more than half of his life to the National Circus of Cuba and performed as a professional clown in over 13 countries. He was also part of the comedy group Pagola la Paga and was associated with the Humor Promotion Center.
With Despingovery Channel, a new popularity was achieved starting in 2025 thanks to its parodies of nature documentaries, in which it used pseudoscientific narration to humorously highlight the deterioration of roads, buildings, and other infrastructures in Cuba.
Ceballos was arrested on June 1 after posting a video recorded at an abandoned military facility. He is charged with "disclosure of secrets concerning State Security," an offense outlined in Article 116 of the Cuban Penal Code.
His cameraman, Christian Rodríguez Riverón, is also detained and is facing charges related to the case.
From prison, the comedian sent a letter in early August in which he denied the accusations against him.
"I am an artist, not a spy; a humorist who reflects the reality visible to everyone, not a criminal," he stated.
The Prosecutor's Office rejected on August 19 a request to modify his precautionary measure, so Ceballos remains in provisional detention at the Combinado del Este, with no trial date known.
Her mother concluded her message holding onto the hope that Eddy would once again turn pain into humor.
"May the pain you experience today be the nourishment for your future work, may the tears transform into the laughter you know how to share with everyone, and may love and wisdom remain within you," he expressed.
