A young man died in Matanzas after being severely injured by the shot of a rifle that, according to reports shared on social media, accidentally fell to the pavement while being carried on his shoulder as he was riding a bicycle.
The official profile «Con Todos La Victoria» reported this Monday on Facebook that the accident occurred in the afternoon of August 25 in Bolondrón, a locality belonging to the municipality of Pedro Betancourt.
According to the account, the young man was riding a bicycle and was carrying a .22 caliber rifle over his shoulder when the weapon fell to the pavement and a shot was fired.
The projectile struck him in the arm, face, and left eye, the official profile indicated.
The publication identifies the weapon as a .22 caliber rifle, brand "Berno 2," although it does not provide other details about its origin or explain why the young man was carrying it. It also does not disclose the identity or age of the victim.
After being injured, he was urgently transported to the Comandante Faustino Pérez Hernández Provincial Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital in Matanzas, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
He ultimately died as a result of his injuries, according to the same source.
"Con Todos La Victoria" used the case to emphasize the need to adhere to safety measures during the carrying and handling of firearms, and warned about the risks of transporting them without proper protection.
The incident occurs just days after the death of José Pablo Santovenia Gómez, 63 years old, after being shot in the rural area of La Ferte, near Coliseo, also in Matanzas.
Unlike the case of Bolondrón, that incident was reported as a violent death, and one of the hypotheses circulated pointed to a possible attempted robbery, although there was no official confirmation regarding the exact circumstances at that time.
Other fatalities related to firearms have been reported this year under various circumstances.
In March, Dailier Rodríguez Tamayo, 19 years old, died from a gunshot while fulfilling Mandatory Military Service in Havana.
The military authorities initially reported the incident as an "accident," a version that was challenged by the family, who claimed that the young man had received a weapon despite prior medical warnings.
In January, Hernán Casternaux Serrano, 31 years old, died from a gunshot in Songo La Maya, Santiago de Cuba, when he intervened to try to separate several people during a fight, according to family testimonies.
