A young Cuban was shot dead in the municipality of Songo La Maya, in Santiago de Cuba, early this Sunday morning, according to information from family members.
Hernán Casternaux Serrano, 31 years old and originally from the town of Cuatro Caminos in the Santiago region, was fatally shot when, at a party, he intervened to try to stop a fight among several people, according to the testimony of a cousin published by the digital newspaper CubaNet.
"He got involved to separate them, and one of those who were fighting went and got a gun. He shot him in the head," the source revealed, adding that the shot caused his death instantly.
After the crime, the assailant fled the scene. According to CubaNet, there was a significant police presence in the area where the incident took place, but the individual had not been apprehended by the time the report was published.
Another person who claimed to know the killer's family, but requested to remain anonymous, told the press: “I understand that he is a criminal who has been incarcerated several times.”
Zenia Kindelán Serrano, also a cousin of Casternaux, confirmed the crime that cut short the life of the young man, who leaves two orphaned girls and his entire family in deep sorrow.
“Today I woke up to the saddest news in the world. We lost Hernán: my cousin, my brother; the kindest person, with a broad smile and a thunderous laugh. It's well said that envy is a bad thing; they couldn't handle his shine. The murderer will pay. He left two little girls without a father and shattered the souls of many people,” the young woman expressed on .
The wake for Casternaux was held at his home and his burial was scheduled at the Santana cemetery, a location near his hometown, as stated by CubaNet.
Casternaux was known as a calm and family-oriented person. His violent death adds another tragedy to a family that has already suffered from a horrific crime committed six years ago.
The father of the young man, Alexis Casternaux Medina, was murdered in 2019, in the town of Ti Arriba, by a woman with whom he had a romantic relationship and three other people. With unimaginable brutality, they took his life to rob him of 70,000 pesos that he had withdrawn from the bank after selling a harvest.
The police arrested Noralis, the victim's lover, her husband, and two other individuals as the perpetrators of the murder. The woman confessed to having plotted the crime together with her husband, aiming to acquire the money with which they both intended to leave the country.
“How cruel fate has been for those men. What a great sorrow: first the father and now the son. It seems like a movie, but no, sadly it is reality,” lamented a person very close to the victims.
