The Cuban artist known on social media as @benny_the_artist, residing in Florida, sought help to recover his green card after losing his wallet on Monday at a gas station in the Wynwood area of Miami.
"Yesterday, I lost my wallet. In the wallet, I had my cards, my license, and most importantly, my green card," he explained, visibly worried in a video posted on Instagram.
According to his account, he believes he lost his wallet at a gas station in Wynwood. The artist initially decided not to block his bank cards because he held out hope that someone would find his belongings and be able to return them to him.
However, that same night someone attempted to use one of the cards, so they proceeded to block them all.
Now he claims that money is the least of his concerns: he just wants to get his driver's license back and, especially, his permanent resident card in the United States.
“Man, the address is on the card, damn it. If you have any shred of conscience that you could help me with, damn it, send me the green card and send me the license,” he asked the person who might have his documents.
The Cuban emphasized that the bank cards are already blocked and directly appealed to the goodwill of whoever has found the wallet.
"I'm not interested; the cards are blocked, and none of them work anymore. I still have faith in humanity," he stated.
"I'm a little desperate."
The artist also explained why he was carrying such an important document as the green card.
"You know how the situation is, how the immigration issue stands, that's why unfortunately I had to keep her close," he noted.
Federal legislation states that permanent residents over the age of 18 must carry their residency card with them. Losing the document does not mean losing immigration status, but it does require the necessary procedures to be followed for its replacement.
USCIS establishes that those who lose their green card must apply for a new one using Form I-90, which can be submitted online or by mail.
The artist's call comes at a time of particular concern regarding immigration issues within the Cuban community in the United States, marked by changes in policies and an increase in the detention of Cuban migrants by ICE.
In this case, the artist has not reported that money was demanded from him in exchange for returning his documents. His hope remains that whoever has the wallet will choose to send it to the address listed on it.
"If someone, damn it, could help me, I don't know what to do. I'm a little, just a little desperate," he concluded.
The post had received over 700 reactions and numerous messages from followers expressing solidarity with the Cuban and wishing him success in recovering his documents.
