The Cuban baseball player Yohandy Morales only needed his second at-bat to make his mark in Major League Baseball. The 24-year-old made his debut this Tuesday with the Washington Nationals and did so with a home run of 407 feet, totaling three hits and a 9-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Nationals Park.
After striking out in his first at-bat, Morales faced the starter AJ Smith-Shawver again in the third inning and punished an 81.4 mph splitter, sending it to left-center field at a exit velocity of 100.8 mph, turning that hit into both his first hit and his first home run in MLB.
The debut didn't end there. Later in the game, he hit a double at 104.9 mph off the center field wall against the lefty Brent Suter, and added a third hit, leaving him just a triple short of completing the cycle on his first night in the majors.
The performance did not surprise those who followed his recent trajectory. In the Caribbean Series Jalisco 2026, representing Puerto Rico with the Cangrejeros de Santurce, Morales was one of the most dominant hitters of the tournament: he batted .500 with 11 hits in 22 at-bats, two home runs, two triples, one double, and six runs scored, leading the competition in triples and was selected as the first baseman of the All-Star Team.
The journey from Jalisco to Washington included an outstanding season in Triple-A with the Rochester Red Wings. In 104 games, he posted an offensive line of .286/.363/.519 with an OPS of .882, 25 home runs, 82 runs scored, and 76 RBIs, placing him among the offensive leaders in the International League and finishing third in home runs and runs scored within the Washington minor league system.
That production opened doors for him when MLB rosters expanded in September, even though he hadn't secured a spot on the big team during the 2026 spring training.
Morales arrived in Washington with equally strong university credentials. Born in Miami on October 9, 2001, he was selected by the Nationals with the 40th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft after an outstanding career with the Miami Hurricanes that earned him a nomination for the Golden Spikes Award.
His debut also has a familial dimension that makes it especially significant. He is the son of Andy Morales, a third baseman who was part of the Cuban national team in the 90s and is remembered for hitting the only Cuban home run against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in May 1999. Andy signed with the New York Yankees in 2001 after leaving Cuba, then went through the Boston Red Sox organization, but never made his MLB debut.
Yohandy achieved on Tuesday the dream that his father could not attain, and he did so with a home run, three hits, and a victory he will hardly forget.
