The US dollar closed this Thursday at 683 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal currency market in Cuba, having risen five pesos in just one day and reaching its highest value in the last 30 days.

At 8:00 p.m. on September 3rd, the euro was at 773 CUP, while the MLC was marked at 509 CUP, although this latter value should be considered indicative due to the low volume of transactions recorded. You can check the complete evolution of the exchange rate in the informal market in Cuba.

These are the closing quotes for the day:

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 683 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 773 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of MLC to CUP: 509 CUP (indicative value, few data points).

The dollar featured one of the day's most significant movements. The 683 CUP represents five pesos more than the 678 CUP from the previous day.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The trend is even more evident when making a broader comparison: seven days ago, the dollar averaged 670 CUP, so it has gained 13 pesos in a week, nearly 2%. Compared to 30 days ago, it has increased by 10 CUP and is now at the highest level recorded during that period.

The euro, for its part, ended the day at 773 CUP. Although it did not register any changes compared to the opening this Thursday, it is about three pesos above the value from the previous day and has gained around 17 pesos over the past week.

With that quotation, the European currency remains the highest-valued currency among the major references of the informal market in Cuba.

The behavior of the MLC requires greater caution. Its indicative value of 509 CUP represents a significant increase compared to the previous day, but the small number of operations detected makes it difficult to interpret that variation with the same certainty as the movements of the dollar and the euro.

The rise in foreign currencies also increases the disparity compared to the official exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III, which is 638 CUP per dollar and 739 CUP per euro.

As of late Thursday, the informal dollar is 45 pesos above the official rate, while in the case of the euro, the difference reaches 34 CUP.

The gap indicates that, despite the introduction of a more flexible official exchange mechanism, significant differences remain between the rates set by the State and the prices at which foreign currencies are traded outside of official channels.

For Cubans who receive their income mainly in national currency, the rise of the dollar has a particularly significant impact: in just one week, 13 more pesos are needed to buy each dollar in the informal market.
