The mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, spoke out this Sunday following the serious incident involving a cargo plane operating for Amazon Prime Air that ended up off the runway at Miami International Airport (MIA), amid flames and a large plume of black smoke.
"We are closely monitoring the situation at @iflymia following the incident this afternoon involving a Prime Air cargo aircraft," wrote Levine Cava on her X account.
The mayor also confirmed that teams from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the airport itself were working on-site.
“At this time, our focus is on everyone involved and ensuring that our rescuers have what they need,” he stated.
Levine Cava added that authorities will provide new information as they learn more details about what happened.
The incident involved a Boeing 767-300 freighter operated by 21 Air for Amazon Prime Air.
The aircraft overshot the runway after landing at around 2:00 p.m. this Sunday at Miami International Airport.
Flight 7598 had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, en route to Miami. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that it will investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The first images of the emergency showed the huge aircraft outside the runway area, with visible flames and a thick column of black smoke rising from the area.
Videos shared from the surrounding area also showed vehicles stopped as emergency teams responded to the incident. In the initial images, the fuselage maintained much of its structure despite the extent of the smoke and flames.
Miami International Airport is managed by Miami-Dade County, whose government is led by Levine Cava. The mayor's reaction came as the deployment of firefighters, airport personnel, and other emergency teams continued in the area.
