Two men barged into a home on Bembeta Street, between San Ramón and Horca, in the city of Camagüey, and violently assaulted an elderly woman in broad daylight, according to a report shared on Facebook by journalist José Luis Tan Estrada.
According to a source who confirmed the details of the incident to CiberCuba, it involved two masked individuals who entered through the back door of the house to surprise the woman, from whom they stole some clothing items and a mobile phone.
The violence of the attack forced a call for an ambulance, which arrived on the scene to assist the victim.
What alarms residents in the area the most is that this incident is not an isolated event. Neighbors claim to have previously warned the authorities about security issues in the backyards and rear access points of the homes in the neighborhood, but have not received an effective response.
"The events continue to repeat themselves," residents reported, according to Tan Estrada.
The pattern has been repeating in Camagüey for months. In August of this year, neighbors captured an alleged thief in the backyard of a house in the Previsora neighborhood because the Police did not arrive in time. In April, a woman was left in critical condition after being attacked with a knife near the Train Station, in the second violent assault recorded in that area in less than a week.
In May, an elderly man in the Modelo neighborhood held a man who attempted to rob his home at noon, and the neighbors tied him up until the police arrived, in another example of the vigilante justice that Cubans resort to due to institutional inaction.
The background dates back to 2025, when hooded gangs terrorized homes in Vertientes and an 83-year-old woman was brutally assaulted to steal her phone and money.
The rise in criminal activity in Camagüey reflects a national trend. The Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory (OCAC) recorded 2,833 verified crimes in Cuba during 2025, a 115% increase compared to 2024 and a 336% rise from 2023, with 1,536 robberies being the most common category.
The Ministry of the Interior itself acknowledged in February of this year a 25% increase in property crimes, which it attributed to the "complex economic situation," without mentioning the regime's responsibility for the deterioration of living conditions.
