A man of Cuban origin is being sought by the authorities in Cancún, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, as a suspected perpetrator of an armed attack that occurred on Friday night, resulting in one death and two people seriously injured, according to local press reports.
According to unofficial information gathered by local media such as Tapachula Hoy, the alleged aggressor had occupied the victims' home for approximately a year without paying rent.
According to that version, the occupant would have summoned the owners on Friday under the pretext of returning the keys to the property, indicating that he would finally vacate it.
According to the cited reports, when the owners arrived at the site, they were greeted with gunfire.
The incident occurred in the Villas Otoch subdivision, in Supermanzana 247 in Cancún.
The attack and its victims
The events occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Abedul Street, when neighbors reported between eight and 10 gunfire sounds, prompting the activation of the "red code" protocol in the area.
One of the men accompanying the couple who owned the property lost his life at the scene of the attack.
The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, while the other survivor was injured in the chest and abdomen.
Both injured individuals attempted to seek medical attention on their own in a gray Volkswagen Jetta, but were intercepted by police and paramedics from ERUM on Kabah Avenue, where they received first aid before being transported to the General Hospital of Cancun.
Without detainees and under investigation
After the attack, the alleged perpetrator fled the scene.
Authorities have launched a search operation in the vicinity of the housing development, but no arrests have been reported so far.
The property was placed under police protection while investigators and experts processed the scene to gather evidence.
Local media reported that the account regarding the housing conflict and the identity of the alleged aggressor is under investigation by the authorities.
A region marked by violence
Villas Otoch Paraíso is considered one of the most dangerous areas in Cancun.
Since 2021, the neighborhood has accumulated over 4,213 calls for help to the emergency number 911, including cases of violence, fights, and aggressive individuals.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing social tension in the city related to events involving Cuban citizens.
In May, four Cubans were arrested after shooting a singer identified as Willy "N", 29 years old, who was hit by nine bullets in Supermanzana 23.
Weeks later, a viral video of a Cuban attacking a Mexican sparked a gathering of about 200 people in front of a house where stones and bottles were thrown, leading the government of Quintana Roo to urge people not to stigmatize the Cuban community due to the actions of individuals.
These episodes created a climate of hostility that the CISVAC organization documented through posters reading "no Cubans allowed," refusals to rent housing, and insults on the street directed at migrants from the island.
Authorities in Quintana Roo continue their investigations to fully identify the alleged assailant and clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack in Villas Otoch.
