Four Cuban nationals were detained in Cancún, Mexico, for their alleged involvement in the armed attack that left a Cuban singer seriously injured, in a case that has caused shock among migrants from the island residing in that tourist city.
According to Caribe Peninsular, the arrested individuals have been identified as Luis “N”, Rubén “N”, Enrique “N”, and Jasiel “N”, who are now in the custody of the Public Ministry while investigations continue into the shooting that took place in Supermanzana 23, an area noted by residents for the increase in violent incidents.
According to reports from local media, authorities were able to locate the suspects inside the Palmas hotel, allegedly after they fled following the armed attack.
Experts from the Attorney General's Office secured fired shells and began reviewing surveillance cameras to reconstruct how the attack occurred and to determine the degree of responsibility of each detainee.
The victim was identified as Willy “N”, a 29-year-old Cuban who, according to preliminary reports, works as a singer in bars in Cancun.
The young man sustained at least nine gunshot wounds to various parts of his body, including the chest, legs, arm, and groin, early Thursday morning near the Batab hotel.
Neighbors in the area alerted 911 after hearing multiple gunshots, which triggered a "code red" operation. Municipal police found the singer lying in the street and severely injured, so Red Cross paramedics rushed him to the General Hospital.
Before being admitted, Willy managed to state that he was intercepted by four individuals while walking through the area, and that they apparently tried to mug him.
His health condition has been reported as serious with an uncertain prognosis.
As of the closing of this report, neither the police of Cancún nor the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo has issued any statements or information regarding the detainees.
The case has once again highlighted the insecurity in areas of Cancun where a significant Cuban community resides. Residents of Supermanzana 23 claim that several violent incidents have been reported in recent weeks that are frightening neighbors and merchants.
