A video of a gender reveal from a Cuban couple living in the United States has become one of the most talked-about clips on TikTok in recent weeks, not necessarily for revealing the baby's sex. The brief intervention from the soon-to-be dad sparked thousands of comments, jokes, and speculations on social media.
Amy and Loiran (@amyhm00) posted a video of over six minutes at the end of August where family and friends shared their wishes and predictions about whether the baby would be a boy or a girl. When it was his turn, Loiran spoke up and made it clear that what mattered to him was something else: "I am the dad and I have no preference, I just want the baby to come healthy."
His words and the way he expressed himself were enough for some users to start making assumptions about him, many of which were based on stereotypes.
The comments section quickly became the true focal point of the video.
The video accumulated 1.3 million views, 43,000 likes, and over 7,000 comments. But it didn't stop there: a trimmed clip focused solely on the father reached 1.9 million views and 84,400 likes this week, even surpassing the original video and further fueling the conversation.
The comments were filled with jokes and speculations. The most liked, with 3,173 interactions, was: "I'm a stranger and I think the dad wants to be a girl." Other users were not far behind: "the dad revealed the gender to us too," "Double gender reveal, not even 3 seconds into the video when I came to the comments," "And I’m the aunt and I think the dad is a girl" —the latter with over 1,200 likes— and the brief yet decisive "He said he was the dad, not the husband."
There were those who came to the couple's defense. One user wrote: "The human mind is so corrupt that everything they see reflects their own thoughts. I see a nervous man, and surely a man who will love his son with kisses, hugs, a lot of love, and without the prejudices of this world." Another was more direct: "What a hypocritical society; many of those commenting are unhappy, troubled people... if the dad is happy about the arrival of his son and enjoys it, what does it matter?"
Amy, the mother, first reacted with annoyance. In a response video posted the next day, she described the comments as "horrendous" and "inappropriate," and noted that many came from pregnant women or mothers. "It's incredible how people have such little sensitivity and are capable of commenting things like that to someone who is pregnant," she said, before concluding with, "I just tell them to reflect on themselves, that God exists and so does karma."
However, as days went by, Amy decided to turn the situation around. Instead of fading away, she took advantage of the virality to continue producing content, using the hashtag #machoremacho —a nod to the grandfather in the video who shouted "macho, macho, remacho"— and responding to the cheekiest comments with laughing emojis. The strategy worked: the community continued to follow her, and the clip of the father kept accumulating views day after day.
The phenomenon also attracted users who tried to seek explanations for the father's behavior. A Cuban TikToker known as "Camagüeyano" posted a video of more than seven minutes in which he attributed the father's gestures and way of speaking to factors related to upbringing, a personal interpretation that does not allow for conclusions to be drawn about a person's sexual orientation. The creator himself clarified that "this does not mean that the boy is homosexual."
In the end, it was revealed that the baby is a boy. The gender reveals of Cubans abroad have been creating viral moments like this for months, but few have managed to make the comments themselves the real show.
