The Cuban actress and influencer Ángela Lemus issued a direct warning to Mexicans through a video posted on Instagram that amassed over 1.5 million views in just a few days.
The message begins straightforwardly: "Mexicans, open your eyes. I am Cuban and I am worried about Mexico and Mexicans."
Lemus draws a parallel between the rhetoric of "free aid" that initiated the Cuban revolution and the social programs currently promoted by the government of Claudia Sheinbaum. His argument is compelling: "When the government gives you something, it doesn't come from the government's pocket; it comes from what the people produce. Nothing is free."
The young woman recalls that Cubans had already tried to warn Venezuelans before it was too late. "We told them: 'be careful, we already know that story.' And they didn't believe us, and look at how Venezuela is now."
According to him, the control mechanism is always the same: "When the people start to feel that they owe the politician gratitude for everything they receive, it becomes easier to buy their vote, their silence, and their freedom. And they know this."
Among the warning signs identified in Mexico, it is mentioned that "journalists and media face pressures and a freedom of expression that is increasingly questioned."
It also criticizes the relationship between Sheinbaum and Havana. "A regime that has gone decades without a free press, massacring its people, forcing them to emigrate. It has political prisoners where all human rights are violated. It has Cubans suffering from hunger and misery, living in a land so rich and a country full of opportunities that has dragged them into filth."
And he poses a direct question to Mexicans: "Do you want that for Mexico?"
The actress concludes her message with the same phrase she opened with, now transformed into a conclusion: "Mexicans, open your eyes, because Cuba also believed that all of that was free, and today we know how much it cost us."
It is not the first time Lemus has used social media to denounce the regime's repression. Last April, he published another video that went viral, depicting an interrogation by the Cuban State Security, with the ultimatum "you leave the country or we put you in prison."
