The horse thefts continue to raise alarm among owners and farmers in Cuba. This time, two young people from San José de las Lajas, in Mayabeque, are desperately searching for their animals and are offering substantial rewards to recover them alive.
The Facebook page Rodeo Cubano shared a call for assistance two days ago to help find the two horses belonging to Tito Suárez and Yordan Quintero, both residents of San José de las Lajas.
"Please don't kill them. Help us find them," the post pleaded, reflecting one of the greatest fears surrounding this type of theft: that the animals will be sacrificed before their owners can locate them.
For the moor horse of Tito Suárez, 200,000 pesos are offered, while for the bay horse of Yordan Quintero, the reward amounts to 100,000 pesos and a fattened bull.
"To the people who have them: please, do not harm them. Return them. The offered reward will be paid," insisted Rodeo Cubano.
The cases had been reported separately just one day prior. El Más Puro Rodeo Cubano reported that Yordan's animal was taken from a small pen located behind the funeral home in San José de las Lajas.
According to the account, the horse was only a few centimeters from the family home and vanished during the early morning hours.
Its owner was preparing it for work and to attach it to a spider, so its loss also means losing a future tool for livelihood.
"Today they have stolen much more than a horse: they have taken away his future tool for work and a very important part of his effort," noted the publication.
The case of Tito Suárez was also shared by Rodeo Cubano. The owner described the impact the theft has had on his family.
«Not only did you steal a horse from me. You stole my livelihood, my food and that of my child, my entertainment and a part of my life,» he expressed.
This new request for help adds to other reports of horse and cattle thefts in various Cuban provinces.
At the end of August, four more caballerías were reported stolen in Cienfuegos, where their owners also publicly requested that they not be sacrificed.
Days earlier, two horses used by acrobatic girls were stolen in Colón, Matanzas.
In June, another family came to offer a reward of 1,000 dollars for animals stolen in Ciego de Ávila.
The concern over cattle theft has reached such a magnitude that recently more than 330 mounted individuals were mobilized in Camagüey as part of efforts to combat these crimes.
