The death of Alexander Pantoja Bertot does not answer the questions of his family: after it was revealed this Sunday that the employee of the Electric Company of Santiago de Cuba was found deceased, his sister Yaima Bertot demanded clarification on what happened during the days he was missing and called for justice.
In a Facebook post, Yaima expressed gratitude to everyone who participated in the search for her brother, even though the outcome was what the family feared after several days without news.
"We are deeply grateful to each of those people who have helped in the search for my brother, even though it is unfortunately already without life," he wrote.
The woman acknowledged that, given the time that has passed, she knew this outcome was a possibility, but made it clear that for the family, another phase begins now: to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death and determine if there were any responsible parties.
"I knew this was the most likely outcome given how long he had been missing, but now another battle begins, which is to understand the reasons and who did this. May the full weight of the law fall upon them. My brother did not deserve this," he expressed.
So far, however, the authorities have not publicly reported that Alexander was a victim of a crime nor have they determined the cause of his death.
However, the Electric Company of Santiago de Cuba reported this Sunday that experts and authorities are working to clarify the circumstances and causes of the death.
The communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada also addressed the case this Sunday and raised several questions that, in his opinion, remain unanswered after the discovery of the body: what happened after Alexander was left in the work area, who was the last person to see him alive, and why was he doing that work alone.
Mayeta also questioned whether Alexander's history within the Electric Company could have influenced the magnitude of the operation launched to find him, comparing those resources to the challenges reported by other Cuban families searching for missing persons.
The communicator clarified that there is no evidence to suggest that this was the reason for the deployment, but deemed it pertinent to raise the question.
Alexander had disappeared on Thursday while performing work duties in a rural area of Santiago de Cuba, where he was inspecting an electrical line connected to the Gota Blanca reservoir, between Palma Soriano and Contramaestre.
As the hours passed, the search was expanded, and for this Sunday, it was planned to strengthen the ground tracking and use drones.
Before the outcome was known, Yaima had voiced her suspicions that someone might have intervened in her brother's disappearance and publicly requested information from anyone who had had any issues or arguments with him.
Finally, a team of park rangers found the body this Sunday in El Palmar, Contramaestre municipality.
