Guillermo Rivero de La Rosa, a renowned Cuban broadcaster with more than three decades of experience in national radio and television, passed away this Monday due to a heart attack, as announced by his colleague Alberto Cordoví Benítez on Facebook.
Cordoví Benítez, director of radio programs with a long career at the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT), was one of the first to deliver the news with heavy-hearted words: “Once again, I wake up to bad and sad news. My friend, brother, and coworker Guillermo Rivero de La Rosa has passed away from a heart attack.”
Known affectionately as "Guille," Rivero de La Rosa was for many years the voice of the late-night program "Cuba Tonight" on Radio Taíno, one of the highest-rated shows in Cuban radio, which airs from 11:00 PM to 12:57 AM featuring musical and cultural content.
He was also associated with Radio Metropolitana, a Havana-based station that operates on FM 98.3 and AM 910, and with Radio Reloj, the iconic national continuous news station.
"Guille was an artist in every sense of the word, a man who loved radio. Those who knew him are aware that he was very supportive, always willing to help anyone who approached him, and above all, he was an excellent son," said Cordoví Benítez while describing the human dimension of the deceased.
On television, Guillermo produced a short three-minute news segment in the 90s that aired on Saturday nights between the two movies on the Cubavisión channel. For several years, he hosted the segment "Cartelera," which was broadcast daily at 8:30 PM following the Noticiero Nacional. He also participated in the program "Cuerda Viva."
In 2022, he joined the program "Piso 6" to present a segment dedicated to the most played music on the radio.
The journalist Ana Teresa Badia also expressed her sorrow on : "My friend Guillermo Rivero de La Rosa passed away from a heart attack and it hurts. I always told him that I appreciated his affection and support."
Rivero de La Rosa will be laid to rest at the funeral home on Calzada and K, in El Vedado, Havana, and the burial has been scheduled for 3:00 pm.
His departure adds to a painful streak of losses in the Cuban radio community.
In recent months, among others, René González Dussac, broadcaster for Radio Cadena Habana; Lázaro Chiang Macate, journalist for Radio Reloj; Santiago Ramírez Frías, from Radio Ciudad Bandera; and Jorge Luis Michelena, a colleague of Rivero de La Rosa at Radio Metropolitana, who passed away in February 2025.
