The Cuban peso weakened again this Monday against the major currencies. By the end of the day, the US dollar reached 698 pesos (CUP) and the euro rose to 794 CUP in the informal currency market in Cuba.
At 8:00 p.m. Cuban time, the dollar had gained four pesos in just one day, standing at 694 CUP from the previous day. The U.S. currency has also seen an increase of 14.5 pesos over the past week, reaching its highest value in the last 30 days at 698 CUP.
The euro also maintained its upward trend, closing at 794 CUP, which is 3.5 pesos higher than the previous session. In just one week, it has gained 16.5 pesos and is only one peso below its highest point in the last 30 days, which is 795 CUP.
The difference between the two main currencies thus widens to 96 pesos in favor of the euro.
Exchange Rate Evolution
For its part, the MLC was approximately around 509 CUP, although the available data at the close was limited, and therefore, this value should be interpreted with caution.
The closing quotes for this Monday are as follows:
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 698 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 794 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 509 CUP (informative value, limited data).
The increase keeps the gap open between the informal market and the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III, which is set at 655 CUP per dollar and 760 CUP per euro.
This means that the dollar is being sold in the parallel market for 43 pesos above the official rate, while the difference for the euro reaches 34 pesos.
The gap persists even though the official exchange rate has also depreciated over the past month: the dollar rose from 628 to 655 CUP and the euro from 727 to 760 CUP.
The rising cost of foreign currencies has a significant impact on Cubans in a context characterized by inflation, low wages, and the partial dollarization of the economy. Dollars and euros continue to be in high demand for emigration, importing goods, protecting savings, and conducting numerous transactions within the private sector.
The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the informal market created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency buying and selling posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.
