Misael Aguilar Santurio, 18 years old, was arrested after allegedly shooting at a 16-year-old during an argument inside a truck in the southwest part of Miami-Dade County, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO).
In a report by CBS News, which obtained the arrest report, the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, around 6:30, near Southwest 203rd Street and 129th Avenue, in the Homestead area.
According to the arrest report, Aguilar Santurio and four other individuals were inside a black Ford pickup truck when the suspect pointed a gun at one of the occupants.
The 16-year-old tried to disarm him unsuccessfully and ran out of the vehicle, at which point he was shot several times in the lower limbs.
One of the other occupants tried to hold the suspect from behind to prevent him from continuing to shoot, but Aguilar Santurio turned around and fired once toward the group, missing everyone.
The injured minor was transferred by helicopter to the Jackson South Medical Center, where he remained in critical but stable condition.
The MDSO confirmed that a second teenager who tried to intervene to stop the shooting was also targeted, though he was not injured.
After the incident, Aguilar Santurio fled the scene at full speed. The security cameras of neighbor Cecilia Richardson captured the police activity and the truck driving away.
" we only saw the cars speeding through the neighborhood and then the police arrived within minutes. Everything happened very quickly. Yes, we heard two gunshots," Richardson told CBS Miami.
Another neighbor, Rubén González, described the moment: “I heard what sounded like gunshots. It was like pop, pop, pop. It's something that rarely happens in this neighborhood. It's disturbing because I also have small children.”
What accelerated the resolution of the case was an unusual decision: Aguilar Santurio's adoptive father contacted the authorities this Friday to voluntarily turn in his son and return the weapon used.
The agents searched the residence, recovered the weapon, and proceeded with the arrest in less than 24 hours after the shooting.
After his arrest, the 18-year-old made what authorities described as a "self-serving statement," according to the arrest report cited by the Miami Herald.
Aguilar Santurio faces charges of second-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a firearm.
Upon hearing the news of the arrest, Gonzalez did not hide his relief: "I'm glad. I'm glad. This keeps him away from here."
The MDSO indicated that the motive for the shooting remains unclear. The suspect is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting the setting of their bail.
This episode adds to a series of armed violence incidents in Miami-Dade throughout September, including a shooting in Little Havana that left two dead and two injured at the beginning of the month.
