The municipality of Manuel Tames in Guantánamo has reported 23 cases of fever this week and remains on alert for this indicator, reported the station Radio Guantánamo this Saturday.
Of the detected cases, 14 correspond to the health area of Manuel Tames and nine to the area of Jamaica. Dr. Georvis Castellanos Ramírez from the municipal hygiene department explained that the territory is on high alert due to the febrile cases, while remaining vigilant regarding the transmission of dengue.
The specialist also noted that the health area of Manuel Tames currently represents the "most complex" zone of the municipality.
According to Castellanos, one of the main causes identified is the presence of standing water in low tanks, bottles, tires, and other containers that can become breeding grounds for the mosquito Aedes aegypti.
To address the issue, the authorities are implementing targeted technical treatments and other sanitation measures with the support of workers from various agencies, the source affirmed.
This scenario is compounded by the proliferation of micro-dumps of solid waste in various areas of the municipality, a situation that the authorities also associate with health risks.
The health official acknowledged that landfills are eliminated through joint efforts with the Community Services Company and the local population, but they later reappear.
In this regard, he explained that these waste accumulation points not only promote the presence of Aedes aegypti, but also of rodents, cockroaches, and other carriers of infectious diseases.
On September 9, the official newspaper Venceremos reported that the municipalities of Imías, Baracoa, and Guantánamo remain in active transmission of dengue, while El Salvador, Manuel Tames, and San Antonio del Sur are under surveillance due to an increase in febrile and suspected patients.
It also reported more than 30 confirmed cases through PCR and the simultaneous circulation of serotypes two, three, and four of the virus.
Since the end of August, the province remained in Epidemiological Alert, while accumulating micro and mega dumps with no real collection capacity.
The health deterioration in Guantánamo is part of a broader national crisis. By the end of July, the province reported a week with 23 suspected cases of dengue and two municipalities at alarm level.
