A 17-year-old teenager lost his life in the early hours of Saturday after being shot in the neighborhood of Allapattah, in the northwest area of Miami, as confirmed by local authorities.
According to information from Miami Fire Rescue reported by Local 10, rescue units arrived at the 3700 block of Northwest 23rd Court, between 36th and 38th Streets, at 1:52 a.m., after receiving a report of a person with a gunshot wound. The young man was immediately transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in extremely critical condition, where he passed away that same night as a result of his injuries.
The identity of the adolescent has not been disclosed by the authorities.
Alongside the minor, a 45-year-old woman was also taken to the hospital for evaluation, although rescue services indicated that she had no injuries. The relationship between the two was not clarified by the police.
The Miami Police closed Northwest 23rd Court at 38th Street while officers and detectives processed the scene. Forensic investigators were seen entering and exiting the area with equipment, and a transparent evidence bag containing what appeared to be a weapon was visible at the location.
The shooting occurred near Miami Jackson Senior High School, although authorities reported no connection to the educational institution.
Residents in the area reported to local media that they heard multiple gunshots followed by screams and the sound of people running. One of them mentioned counting approximately seven shots. Another neighbor pointed out that security cameras captured activity in the area, but stated that the footage had been deleted and could not be shared.
The incident occurs during a period of heightened violence in Miami-Dade. A week earlier, a shooting in Little Havana linked to domestic violence left two dead and two injured, including a 13-year-old girl. On the same Saturday as the shooting in Allapattah, in Homestead, an 18-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting at a 16-year-old during an argument inside a pickup truck, leaving him in critical condition.
Allapattah is a densely populated area with a significant presence of Latino communities and immigrants, and it has been the scene of episodes of violence in recent years.
As of the end of this Sunday, the investigation into the crime remained active, and the police had not disclosed details about the circumstances that triggered the shooting or about any potential suspects.
