The President of the United States, Donald Trump, issued another stern warning against the Cuban regime from the podium of the United Nations on Tuesday, asserting that, while communism will not find a place in his country, “freedom will come to Cuba”.
Communism will never reach the United States, but freedom will come to Cuba, and security and stability will arrive in Mexico," Trump stated during his speech at the 81st General Assembly of the UN.
The statement came after the president dedicated part of his speech to Cuba and assured that his administration seeks "a fundamental change" in the situation of the island.
Trump stated that the Cuban communist regime is under "enormous pressure, the greatest it has ever faced" and described the country as "an absolutely failed state."
"It is failing like never before and will fall," declared the American president.
The president also spoke about contacts between Washington and Havana and placed the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, directly in charge of those efforts.
“Marco Rubio is leading a negotiation and is deeply involved in the conversations with Cuba. We’ll see what happens,” said Trump.
He also presented the Cuban situation as a matter related to U.S. national security and asserted that his government would not allow the existence, near its borders, of a platform from which foreign adversaries could threaten the United States.
However, Trump also accused the Cuban regime of coordinating for decades with leftist organizations within the United States and asserted that the State Department has documented links to the Communist Party of the United States, Antifa, and the Democratic Socialists of America.
The words from this Tuesday deepen a line that Trump has been publicly maintaining about the political future of the island.
During the same speech, he asserted that "Cuba will fall and freedom will arrive.", while also highlighting the pressure currently faced by the government of Havana and Rubio's role in the contacts with the Cuban authorities.
The statements provoked an immediate reaction from Havana: the Cuban delegation left the General Assembly hall during the segment in which Trump spoke about the island, after he referred to the country as an "absolutely failed state," according to EFE.
