At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, the closes this Monday, September 21, 2026, with a general upward trend. The US dollar and the euro show increases compared to the previous day, while the MLC, with low trading volume, also marks a gain that should be considered as a guiding value.

The US dollar is quoted at 718 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this Monday, its average value in the informal market. This represents an increase of five pesos compared to the previous trading day, when it was valued at 713 CUP. In the past week, the greenback has climbed twenty pesos —up from 698 CUP a week ago— representing a rise of 2.9%. Over the monthly horizon, the currency has accumulated a gain of 54.5 pesos, although it is important to note that the 30-day comparison may partly reflect methodological adjustments of the index. The dollar continues to set the tone for the informal market in a context of structural currency shortages.

The euro stands at 818 Cuban pesos (CUP), compared to 815 from the previous session, representing an increase of 2.5 pesos. In the last seven days, the European currency has gained 23.5 pesos —up from 794 CUP a week ago— marking a rise of 3%. Additionally, the euro hits its highest point in the last 30 days precisely today, with 818 CUP as the peak for this period. It is established as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, surpassing the dollar by one hundred pesos, solidifying its dominant position.

The MLC closes around 504 Cuban pesos (CUP), although this figure should be considered indicative due to the low volume of transactions recorded during this time period. Compared to the previous day, it has risen by 9.5 pesos from the 495 CUP recorded yesterday. However, in the weekly comparison, it has decreased by five pesos compared to the 509 CUP from seven days ago. Lacking physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash foreign currencies.

Exchange Rate Evolution

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 718 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 818 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 504 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 669 CUP per dollar and 767 CUP per euro, remains significantly below the values that apply in everyday practice in the informal currency market. The gap between both markets reaches 49 pesos for the dollar and 51 pesos for the euro.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency among the population. In the last month, the official dollar rate has risen from 638 to 669 CUP, while the euro rate has climbed from 745 to 767 CUP, movements that have not succeeded in narrowing the gap with the parallel market.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans. The accumulated rise of the dollar in the past four weeks —more than 54 pesos in the informal market— illustrates the constant pressure on the Cuban peso and the challenges faced by those who rely on remittances or savings in foreign currency to maintain their purchasing power.

The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the Cuban informal market, created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency trading posts in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation eliminates atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated multiple times a day.
