The dollar and the euro regained ground against the Cuban peso this Tuesday, closing the day at the highest levels seen in the last 30 days in Cuba's informal currency market.

At 8:00 p.m., local time, the US dollar was trading at 720 Cuban pesos (CUP), while the euro reached 823 CUP, according to the average values of the .

The session confirms the upward trend that both currencies have maintained over the past week.

The dollar rose by 2 pesos in just 24 hours, from 718 CUP the previous day. Seven days ago, it was trading at 698 CUP, which means it has accumulated an increase of 22 pesos—approximately 3.2%—over the week.

The U.S. dollar thus reaches its highest value in the last 30 days.

The euro advanced further this Tuesday, increasing by five pesos compared to the previous close, when it stood at 818 CUP.

In one week, it has risen from 795 to 823 CUP, an increase of 28 pesos, which is approximately 3.5%.

With this quotation, the European currency also reaches its highest point in the last 30 days and remains the most expensive currency among the main benchmarks of the informal market, 103 pesos above the dollar.

The MLC moves in the opposite direction

The freely convertible currency (MLC) closed with an indicative average value of 493 CUP, although in this case, the available data is limited and should be interpreted with caution.

The reference indicates a drop of 11.5 pesos compared to the previous day and approximately 44 pesos over the course of a week, when it was around 537 CUP.

Unlike cash dollars and euros, the MLC does not exist as physical currency and essentially operates as a bank balance used in state-run establishments that operate under that system.

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 720 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 823 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 493 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The informal market continues to be above the official exchange rate

The difference also persists regarding the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III.

This Tuesday, the official rate was set at 670 CUP per dollar and 768 CUP per euro, below the rates observed in the informal market.

The gap is 50 pesos per dollar and 55 pesos per euro.

Although Segment III introduced a more flexible exchange scheme, unofficial rates continue to serve as an important reference for many Cubans seeking foreign currency outside of state-run channels.

The evolution of the last week clearly shows the pressure on the peso: the dollar has gained over 20 CUP and the euro nearly 30 CUP in just seven days.
