Two cranes fall onto the roof of a house in Fort Lauderdale

Two cranes fell this Thursday onto the roof of a residential home in Fort Lauderdale, in Broward County, Florida, in an accident that occurred in two stages throughout the morning and, despite the significant material damage, resulted in no injuries.

The first incident occurred around 9:10 in the morning when a truck with an articulated crane from the company Cooper Crane overturned on the 800 block of Southeast 8th Street while a pest control company was using it to prepare the house for a tenting treatment against termites, a common practice in South Florida. The extended arm of the machinery struck the roof and the back wall of the house, causing substantial damage to the structure.

The Fort Lauderdale firefighters arrived at the scene minutes after the first accident, according to Telemundo 51, which captured aerial images from its helicopter showing the machinery overturned on the property.

Hours later, while the teams were attempting to remove the first crane, a second one fell onto the same house, worsening the already existing damage.

After the second collapse, a hazardous materials team was summoned to the site to address a potential diesel fuel leak, according to officials from the fire rescue team.

The authorities also called in a fire inspector and a building inspector to assess the structural damage and ensure that there were no additional risks to the property.

According to a friend of the owner, the house was in the process of construction or renovation at the time of the accident.

The causes of both collapses are still under investigation by the fire department and the city's building department. "It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse of either of the cranes," Telemundo 51 noted in its report.

The accident occurs just ten days after a crane collapsed in the Brickell neighborhood in Miami, crushing three vehicles and injuring four people, which has reignited the debate about the safety of this type of machinery in residential areas and high-construction activity zones in South Florida.

Fort Lauderdale has a previous history of serious accidents involving cranes: in April 2024, the collapse of one of these machines in the city resulted in the death of a Hispanic worker and left three injured, a case that led to citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration against two contractors.
