The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released an open letter on Tuesday, consisting of 25 pages, addressed to American voters urging them to punish President Donald Trump in the midterm elections on November 3, in the most explicit episode of Iran's influence campaign against the elections.
The spokesperson for the IRGC, Hossein Mohebbi, presented the document at a press conference in Tehran, calling Trump a "confirmed liar" and a man "insanely greedy."
"The national security of the United States and the lives of its military personnel are in the hands of someone who is not only a habitual liar but also an incredibly greedy man whose sole motivation in life is to amass more and more wealth," stated the official as reported by the New York Post.
The letter accuses Trump of concealing the alleged "peaceful nature" of the Iranian nuclear program, directly contradicting the findings of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has indicated that Tehran is enriching uranium far above the levels required for civilian use.
The document also critiques the U.S. economic situation. "The U.S. economy is on the brink of collapse, yet it keeps telling Americans that the economy is booming," one passage states. "Soon the dam will break, and the economy will implode, causing great pain for Americans for many, many years," it adds.
The IRGC also rejected its designation as a terrorist organization, asserting that there is "not a single verifiable instance" in which it has committed violence against civilians, a claim that contrasts with accusations that the regime killed thousands of protesters during the crackdown in January 2026, with estimates ranging from 3,428 dead according to the group Iran Human Rights to much higher figures.
The letter arrives amid the war that began on February 28, 2026, with Operation Epic Fury, a joint offensive by the U.S. and Israel against Iranian nuclear and military facilities.
The conflict caused the price of Brent crude to rise from $67 to over $126, and at its most critical point, it reduced naval traffic in the Strait of Hormuz by 97%. By the end of September, according to maritime tracker Kpler, more than seven million barrels per day were once again flowing through the strait, although total exports from the Persian Gulf remained at 72% of pre-war levels.
Mohebbi attempted to deny that Iran has lost control of the strait: "The fact that the Americans can, at great cost and high risk, sneak a small vessel in under the cover of darkness to export, say, 100 or 200 barrels of oil, does not mean that the strait is open."
September polls show Democrats at 53% compared to 41% for Republicans in the generic congressional vote, according to the survey NPR/PBS News/Marist. 45% of registered voters state that their vote is primarily a rejection of Trump, while only 27% see it as support for the president.
The U.S. intelligence had already warned about an Iranian influence campaign against the midterms, and Meta detected in August a network of Iranian-origin accounts with artificial intelligence-generated content aimed at Republicans. Several Republicans have begun to distance themselves from Trump as the elections approach.
Trump declared before the UN that the midterm elections will have "absolutely no influence" on his policy towards Iran.
