Spain: Renfe launches a calculator to find out how much you save with the Vía Pass: discounts of up to 90%

Frequent travelers using Renfe's Avant trains can now calculate before purchasing which pass suits them best and how much they could save during the last months of 2026.

Renfe has added a calculator to estimate savings with the Vía Pass, its subscription system for regular travelers of the Avant services, which connects nearby cities through medium-distance high-speed trains.

The tool allows users to input the trips they plan to take and compare the results with other ways of purchasing their travels, including 30-day passes, as the company explained in an official statement regarding the new Pase Vía calculator.

How the new Renfe calculator works

The idea is for the traveler to input how many trips they expect to make and to check in advance the cost difference between using the Vía Pass for the entire quarter or continuing to purchase other types of subscriptions.

This is especially useful because the Vía Pass does not apply a single fixed discount throughout the entire period: the discount increases progressively as the frequency of trips grows.

Therefore, the final savings depend on how many trips are made and the routes chosen.

Renfe states that the calculator provides a personalized estimate specifically to prevent users from having to do all those calculations themselves before making a decision.

What is the Pase Vía?

The Renfe Vía Pass is a subscription primarily aimed at individuals who use Avant trains regularly for work, academic, family, or personal reasons.

The subscription is free, nominative, personal, and non-transferable and is valid for a natural quarter.

The periods are January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December.

Renfe has already opened the Pase Vía corresponding to the last quarter of 2026, so it can currently be used for travel made between October and December.

You don't have to pay for all the trips in advance

One of its main differences compared to traditional subscriptions is that the user does not have to pay the full price for all planned trips at the beginning of the quarter.

When subscribing, a bank card is provided, and each trip is charged when it is used, applying the corresponding discount based on the level of recurrence achieved.

This allows the discount to increase as the number of trips accumulates throughout the quarter.

There is a minimum number of trips

Although there is no initial payment required for all journeys, the Vía Pass does establish a minimum frequency.

The general model includes a minimum of 20 trips during the quarter.

If 45 days or less pass between the first and the last trip, the minimum becomes 10 trips.

The system itself determines which of those conditions applies to the user.

This point is important: if the traveler uses the Vía Pass but ultimately does not reach the required minimum, Renfe stipulates that they must pay the corresponding difference for the remaining trips.

On the other hand, if someone subscribes but does not take any trips or maintain active reservations, they can cancel it without being required to meet that minimum.

The discount can reach up to 90%, but not from the first trip

Renfe promotes the Vía Pass with discounts that can reach up to 90%, but that figure needs context.

The percentage increases with the number of trips taken, and 90% corresponds to the highest levels of recurrence.

According to the official table published by Renfe, the initial trips start with a lower percentage, and the discount gradually increases as more journeys are accumulated.

For example, the table shows the discount for trips 19 and 20 at 55%, trips 39 and 40 at 70%, trips 79 and 80 at 80%, and trips 119 and 120 at 90%.

This does not mean that someone who takes 120 trips has saved 90% over the whole quarter. Renfe's own table places the average accumulated discount after 120 trips at 72.3%.

Therefore, the new calculator can provide a more useful reference than simply looking at the maximum advertised discount.

Pase Vía or Abono 10-30: they do not serve exactly the same purpose

Renfe also maintains the Abono 10-30 for Avant services.

This title allows for 10 trips over 30 days, and in 2026 there is a 50% discount.

Unlike the Vía Pass, the 10-30 Subscription is purchased for a specific route between two stations.

Renfe's own frequently asked questions indicate that the 10-30 Pass may be more suitable for those who know they will only make ten trips in a specific month and will then stop traveling.

The Pase Vía, on the other hand, is designed for those who travel frequently throughout much of the term or use different Avant origins and destinations.

The Pase Vía allows you to accumulate trips from various routes

Another of its features is that the subscription is not tied to a single pair of stations.

Trips made through different Avant relationships can accumulate to increase the frequency and, consequently, the discount percentage.

It can also be used on certain routes of commercial services, in economy class, authorized as recurring Avant services.

The system allows for a maximum of four trips per day.

You need to book ahead of boarding the train

Having the Pase Vía active does not eliminate the obligation to reserve a spot.

Before each trip, the user must formalize their journey for the chosen day and train.

Reservations can be made through Renfe.com, the Renfe app, ticket counters, self-service machines, travel agencies, and telephone sales.

If a reservation is ultimately not going to be used, it must be canceled with at least 60 minutes' notice. Otherwise, Renfe may charge the cost of the trip even if the passenger does not take it.

More than two million trips since the beginning of 2026

The Pase Vía began operations in early 2026, and Renfe reports that during its first nine months, it recorded 2,068,990 trips.

In total, Avant services transported 13.2 million passengers during 2025.

Among the most in-demand routes were Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid, with 2.66 million trips; Madrid-Toledo, with 2.09 million; Figueres-Barcelona, with 1.58 million; and Madrid-Puertollano, with 1.40 million, according to data released by the company.

How to know if the Pase Vía is worth it for you

For those who regularly use Avant, the comparison should be made based on the trips they actually expect to take.

A person who only needs ten concentrated trips in a month may have different requirements than someone who travels multiple times each week during October, November, and December.

The new calculator aims to precisely address that difference: to input the anticipated displacements and compare the costs before selecting the title.

Renfe keeps updated conditions, discount tables, and information for purchasing the pass on the official Pase Vía page.
