A three-year-old girl was rushed to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, after falling from the third floor of an apartment building in North Miami, authorities in Miami-Dade County reported on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a residential complex located on Northeast 18th Avenue, according to a report by the local press.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics responded to the call and transported the minor to the hospital, the main pediatric trauma center in South Florida.
A neighbor was the first to assist her
A resident of the complex identified as Jean Dory was a direct witness to the fall and hurried to assist the little girl.
"I was on the phone, I heard a noise and I saw her on the ground," Dory told CBS News Miami.
The man recounted that the girl had fallen onto the sidewalk and that he acted immediately. According to his testimony, he picked up the child and placed her on the grass. The exact sequence of his subsequent actions is not sufficiently clear in the available information.
In the radio transmissions received during the transfer, a paramedic reported to the dispatchers that the minor was alert and oriented.
Neighbors of the building noted that some bushes located below the window may have partially cushioned the impact of the fall.
The authorities have not revealed how the fall occurred
So far, the authorities have not provided details about the circumstances that led the minor to fall from the window, nor have they publicly updated her health status.
It has also not been reported whether there are adults under investigation or if there were safety measures in place at the window from which the girl fell.
The same complex had already been the scene of another accident
This is not the first incident of this kind reported in the same residential complex.
In April of this year, a four-year-old boy identified as Will fell from the sixth floor of a nearby building in the same area, near the intersection of Northeast 146th Street and Northeast 18th Avenue.
That minor suffered a femur fracture and lung damage and was transferred in critical condition to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to a report at the time by CBS News in its coverage of the case.
The child's mother stated at the time that the window was closed when the accident occurred and that it was later covered with plywood.
The North Miami Police investigated the incident without finding any criminal activity.
Other cases of falls involving minors in Miami-Dade
The incident on Sunday adds to other cases of minors falling from windows reported in northern Miami-Dade during 2026.
In July, an eight-year-old girl fell from the third floor of a building in North Miami Beach, located at 2100 Northeast 169th Street, and was airlifted to the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
The Florida Building Code requires opening control devices for windows in certain residential buildings when the bottom of the opening is less than 36 inches from the floor and the opening is more than 72 inches above the exterior ground level, although the application of this standard varies depending on the age of the property and whether the windows have been recently replaced.
