A perceptible earthquake of preliminary magnitude 3.3 was recorded this Tuesday in eastern Cuba, with reports of people feeling the tremor in the cities of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba.

The event occurred at 9:21 a.m. and had an estimated depth of 24 kilometers, as reported on his Facebook profile by the Doctor of Sciences Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba, part of the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).

Arango specified that reports of perceptibility were received from Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba, although he warned that the parameters initially disclosed are subject to revision.

The specialist explained that this caution is due to the fact that, at the time of his report, only information from two seismological stations was available, meaning both the magnitude and other technical data might be adjusted later.

No immediate material damage or casualties associated with the movement were reported.

According to the CENAIS report, the preliminary parameters align with the information disclosed by Arango Arias: the event occurred at 9:21 a.m., had a magnitude of 3.3 Mw, and was located at a depth of 24 kilometers.

CENAIS Report

The CENAIS report further specified that the epicenter was located about 6 kilometers northeast of Niceto Pérez, in the province of Guantánamo, at coordinates 20.058 degrees north latitude and 75.289 degrees west longitude.

The immediate precedent shows that the eastern region had been experiencing seismic activity in recent weeks.

On September 7th, CENAIS reported 17 earthquakes in just 24 hours in the Santiago-Baconao area, although none of these movements were perceptible to the population.

Also on August 22, another earthquake was reported as perceptible in Santiago de Cuba, in a region that accounts for a significant portion of the country's seismic activity.
