opens this Wednesday, October 7, with its two main currencies giving ground against the Cuban peso.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar declines to 768 CUP, the euro falls to 864 CUP, and the freely convertible currency (MLC) —with limited data during this time frame— hovers around 598 CUP as an indicative value.

Summary of exchange rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 768 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 864 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 598 CUP (indicative value, few data points).

The United States dollar (USD)

The US dollar is trading at 768 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with a buying rate of 760 CUP and a selling rate of 775 CUP.

This represents a drop of two pesos compared to the previous day, when the currency closed around 770 CUP.

In a weekly perspective, the dollar has risen by 14 pesos, compared to the 754 CUP it was at seven days ago, which represents an increase of 1.9%.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The 30-day comparison places the current rate at 85 pesos above the 683 CUP recorded at that time, although this difference may partly reflect methodological adjustments of the index.

In the past month, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 683 CUP and a high of 785 CUP. It continues to set the tone for the informal market in a context of structural currency scarcity.

The euro (EUR)

The euro is currently at 864 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying range of 850 CUP and a selling range of 878 CUP.

Regarding the previous session, the European currency has decreased by six pesos from the 870 CUP recorded in the prior session, representing a decline of 0.7%.

In weekly terms, the euro hardly varies: seven days ago it was trading at 863 CUP, just one peso less than today.

At 30 days, the difference is 88.5 pesos over the 776 CUP at that time, although it is advisable to take this comparison with caution as it may incorporate methodological adjustments.

In the last month, the euro has reached a low of 776 CUP and a high of 885 CUP.

It remains the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, surpassing the dollar by 96 pesos.

The MLC

The MLC registers an indicative value of 598 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase price of 498 CUP and a sale price of 698 CUP.

The available data during this time frame is limited, so this figure should be interpreted with caution.

Regarding the previous session, the MLC has risen by five pesos from the 593 CUP of the prior session.

In the last week, the MLC has seen an increase of 103.5 pesos compared to the 495 CUP from seven days ago (+20.9%), and over the past 30 days, the difference is 176.5 pesos above the 422 CUP at that time (+41.9%), although these fluctuations may partly reflect adjustments in the methodology of the index.

In the last month, it has fluctuated between 416 and 603 CUP. Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Gap between the informal market and the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 695 CUP per dollar and 779 CUP per euro, which remains well below the values that apply in daily practice in the informal currency market.

The difference between the two markets is 73 pesos for the dollar and 85 pesos for the euro.

In the past month, the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 640 to 695 CUP, and that of the euro from 744 to 779 CUP, without closing the gap with the parallel market.
