La Administración Federal de Aviación de Estados Unidos (FAA) advirtió este miércoles sobre la posibilidad de retrasos en los aeropuertos de Miami and Fort Lauderdale due to expected thunderstorms in South Florida.

In its daily air traffic report for October 7, the FAA noted that storms could cause delays at Miami International Airport (MIA), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Orlando (MCO), and Tampa (TPA).

The warning does not mean that airports are closed or that all flights are experiencing delays. It is an operational forecast that may result in delays, route changes, or temporary restrictions depending on the development of the storms.

FAA prepares possible route adjustments in South Florida

The operational plan of the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center includes Miami and Fort Lauderdale among the terminals affected by thunderstorms.

The agency also considers the possibility of implementing traffic management procedures and alternative routes for MIA and FLL, while maintaining coordination measures for the airspace over South Florida.

However, in the operational plan consulted for this note, there was no active general shutdown of operations, a ground stop, or a general delay program specifically for Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Therefore, the impact may vary from one flight to another and can change rapidly during the afternoon and evening depending on the location and intensity of the storms.

Storms and the risk of heavy rainfall in South Florida

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami has forecasted scattered to numerous storms and showers for this Wednesday in South Florida.

Meteorologists warned that heavy rainfall rates and the possibility of multiple rounds of downpours could lead to localized flooding, particularly in the metropolitan areas of the East Coast.

Storms can also temporarily produce strong gusts of wind, reduced visibility, and conditions that require air traffic controllers to space out arrivals and departures of aircraft.

How to check if a flight is delayed?

Travelers planning to use MIA or FLL should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

The Miami International Airport provides real-time information on arrivals and departures, while the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has its own flight search tool.

The FAA itself recommends confirming any specific impact directly with the airline, as general air traffic system restrictions do not necessarily affect all flights equally.

As a background, CiberCuba reported in January delays and cancellations in Miami and Fort Lauderdale due to adverse weather conditions. In July, another disruption caused long lines and numerous delays at MIA following a technological failure by American Airlines.

The situation this Wednesday can change rapidly, so passengers should check their flight information again just before heading to the airport and follow notifications from their airline.
