The American company Gardeners Basics has recalled bags of broccoli seeds for sprouting sold through Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, and other digital platforms due to the risk of contamination with Salmonella.

The withdrawal was announced on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added the product to its alert regarding a salmonella outbreak associated with broccoli sprouts the following day.

The affected bags were distributed throughout the United States via online orders and direct shipments to consumers. According to the statement from the company published by the FDA, they were also sold on the Gardeners Basics website, eBay, and Etsy. The sale of the recalled product has already been halted.

How to identify removed broccoli seeds

The alert specifically refers to the following product, not to all broccoli seeds available on the market:

  • Brand and product: Gardeners Basics Waltham 29 Broccoli Sprouting Seeds.
  • Presentation: resealable white and green bag of one pound (454 grams).
  • UPC Code: 848137042889.
  • Printed label on the packaging: "Packed for 2027".

Those who have a bag of these seeds and are unsure if it is affected should stop using it and consult the company directly.

What to do with the seeds and how to request a refund

The FDA and Gardeners Basics recommend not to use or consume the recalled seeds, nor to eat the sprouts grown from them. Consumers should place both the seeds and the sprouts in a sealed bag and dispose of them. It is not necessary to physically return the product.

The federal agency also advises cleaning and disinfecting the containers and surfaces that have come into contact with the recalled seeds or sprouts to prevent possible cross-contamination.

If the buyer has not yet received a refund, they can request assistance by writing to info@gardenersbasics.com or by sending a text or voice message to 801-769-6181. The company receives messages seven days a week, but does not handle live phone calls.

To process the inquiry, Gardeners Basics requests to provide the order number and the platform where the purchase was made.

The general investigation reports 32 cases in six states

In its update on October 9, the FDA reported that the investigation into the Salmonella Bovismorbificans outbreak related to sprouts and broccoli microgreens accounts for 32 individuals sickened, three hospitalizations, and no deaths. The cases were reported in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

These figures correspond to the outbreak investigated by health authorities, not to infections specifically attributed to the seeds sold by Gardeners Basics. The company itself indicated that, as of October 6, it had not received any reports of illnesses related to its recalled product.

As part of the investigations, the FDA detected salmonella in a sample of seeds from the supplier linked to the lot W4105. Genetic analysis identified the same strain associated with the patients in the outbreak. Authorities are keeping the investigation open and have also announced recalls of certain seeds sold by the brands Eden Brothers and Home Grown.

What are the symptoms of a salmonella infection?

A salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of experiencing complications.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend seeking medical attention immediately if you experience bloody diarrhea, a fever higher than 102 °F (38.9 °C), vomiting that prevents you from retaining fluids, signs of dehydration, or diarrhea that does not improve after two days.
