A 40-year-old man was arrested in South Florida after being accused of secretly recording a 13-year-old girl while she was using the bathroom in his home, a case that came to light after the teenager's mother discovered a video on her cell phone.
The suspect has been identified as Yelier Alderete, a resident of Hialeah, who had been living with his girlfriend—the complainant—and her daughter since March, according to the arrest report from the Hialeah Police that the local chain WSVN accessed.
According to the researchers, the woman began to suspect Alderete because he preferred to sleep on the living room sofa rather than share the bedroom with her. On September 23, she found him sleeping on the sofa with his mobile phone resting on his chest.
According to the police report, she took the device, brought it to the bedroom, and transferred approximately 400 photos and videos to her own phone before returning it. Upon reviewing the files, she discovered a recording of her daughter inside the bathroom of the house.
The police indicated that the video, lasting about four minutes, allegedly showed Alderete placing the phone in the bathroom and leaving. Moments later, the minor entered and used the facilities without realizing she was being recorded. The footage would also show the man returning to retrieve the device.
On October 6, the mother went to the Hialeah Police Department to report what had happened and provided a copy of the video. Since the alleged victim was a minor, the case was referred to detectives in the Special Victims Unit.
The next day, the investigators located the subject at an address in Miami and arrested him. He was taken in for questioning, but according to the report, he exercised his right to remain silent.
Based on the mother's testimony and video evidence, investigators proceeded to arrest him on a charge of video voyeurism involving a minor.
Alderete is facing a charge of digital voyeurism against a victim under 16 years old, in accordance with the Florida Statute § 810.145. Under this law, when the accused is 24 years or older and the victim is under 16, the offense is classified as a second-degree felony, carrying a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The suspect is at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center for processing.
A judge determined that there was enough evidence to proceed with the case and set a bond of $15,000, according to the report cited by WSVN.
The case is in the hands of the authorities.
This case adds to a series of voyeurism arrests recorded in the metropolitan area of Miami in recent years. Last August, Oscar Chamizo Martín was arrested in southwest Miami-Dade for filming a Walmart employee in the bathroom of that store, also under the same statute.
In August 2024, Alexander Pérez Piloto was arrested in Hialeah for spying on a six-year-old girl in Little Havana, and he was also detained at Turner Guilford Knight.
