Desirée Valdés González reported that her son, the Cuban political prisoner Carlos Alain Abrahantes Valdés, was sent to a punishment cell for 15 days for reciting a poem against the political system in the Kilo 7 prison in Camagüey. According to her testimony, the punishment began on October 2 and left him incommunicado and without phone calls.

The mother recounted what happened in an audio sent to Radio Martí, which published the report on October 8. The incident occurred during an inspection at the correctional facility, according to that outlet.

"I don't know how he is doing or if they are feeding him," Valdés González stated. The woman claimed that her 32-year-old son suffers from malnutrition and is underweight, and that on the very day he was sanctioned, his basic medications were denied to him.

He also stated that he has been unable to visit him for a year and four months. Due to the lack of communication, he demanded that the prison authorities put an end to the harassment, allow contact with his son, and ensure the delivery of medication as well as his physical and psychological integrity.

Previously reported assaults and threats

Abrahantes Valdés, a native of Cienfuegos, has been imprisoned since 2023 on an accusation of sabotage related to the alleged burning of warehouses belonging to the Ministry of the Interior. His family rejects this accusation and maintains that he was in another location when the events occurred. The young man is listed in the political prisoner registry of Prisoners Defenders.

In May, CiberCuba reported on the denunciation of a beating against Abrahantes Valdés at Kilo 8 prison, also in Camagüey. According to the testimonies at the time, he was left unconscious and sustained a nasal fracture.

In September, the Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and the Press (ICLEP) reported on the transfer of Ediolvy Marín Mora from Kilo 8 to Kilo 7. Both were threatened with isolation and a possible transfer to Guantánamo if they continued to speak out about the prison conditions, according to that report.

In his statement to Radio Martí, Valdés González demanded that the reprisals against his son be halted: "No one should suffer reprisals for expressing their opinions."
