A homicide investigator from Brevard County, Florida, died when a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction collided head-on with his car while he was responding to investigate a police shooting. The accident resulted in two fatalities.

The agent was identified as Kevin Morris from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, who lost his life on Interstate 95 (I-95) near Titusville at around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.

According to FOX 35 Orlando, a witness saw a 2021 Nissan Sentra make a U-turn near mile marker 223 and start driving in the opposite direction.

The car ended up colliding head-on with Morris's vehicle near mile marker 221. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames and their drivers did not survive.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating the circumstances of the accident. The identity of the other deceased person has not been released.

The agent was responding to investigate a shooting

Morris was headed to investigate a shooting that occurred hours earlier in Mims, where officers responded to an emergency call involving a 79-year-old man.

According to the authorities, a son of the man had asked for help because he feared that his father might take his own life.

The officers determined that he needed an involuntary medical evaluation under Florida's Baker Act, but when the ambulance arrived, the man reportedly pulled out a concealed weapon and pointed it at the police.

The agents shot at the man, who was later taken to a hospital where he passed away.

Shock among politicians and police in Florida

Morris's death provoked numerous condolences from political figures and state law enforcement agencies.

The federal senator Ashley Moody described the news as devastating and expressed her prayers for the agent's family and the entire law enforcement community in Florida.

"His years of service will never be forgotten," he stated.

The congressman Mike Haridopolos also expressed his condolences and emphasized that Morris dedicated his career to protecting others.

For his part, Congressman Byron Donalds, a current candidate for governor of Florida, reminded everyone of the risks that law enforcement officers face daily and urged support for the family during this time.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) expressed its condolences and acknowledged the commitment, honor, and bravery with which Morris performed his work.

The Orlando Police Departments and the sheriff's offices of Orange and Osceola counties also extended their condolences, while Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, joined in expressing messages of solidarity.

The Brevard Sheriff's Office recalled that Morris joined the institution in February 2021, having previously worked in the Palm Bay Police Department from 2001 to 2012.

Throughout his career, he received numerous professional accolades, including an award for saving a life.
